Lockdowns are (for now, thankfully) a thing of the past but the pandemicโs lasting legacy of remote work going mainstream isnโt going anywhere.
In fact, according to a global report by McKinsey, 90% of organisations are continuing to opt for a blend of remote and in-office setups, and within the EU, the percentage of people usually working from home has more than doubled since 2019, with Stockholm and the eastern and midlands of Ireland regions experiencing the highest numbers of remote workersโ40.5% and 39.3% respectively.
The value of this newfound flexibility is multifaceted. As well as reducing commuting times and affording workers a greater work-life balance, remote work allows you to base yourself anywhere in the country youโre living in, meaning a move away from expensive urban areas is more feasible, as long as connectivity isnโt an issue.
With this in mind, there are certain roles that are more suited to remote work than others, so if youโre looking for a new opportunity that will allow you to work from home or want to reinforce remote working practices in your current company, the examples below are a great starting point.
- Product marketing
From SaaS product marketeers to analytics specialists, marketing roles that have a clearly defined purpose and objective and donโt require you to deal directly with clients or customers can undoubtedly be done remotely.
However, as creativity and brainstorming is a part of marketing, no matter what field your speciality is in, keeping the lines of communication open with your team and ensuring you have sufficient video calls with follow up frameworks in place so ideas donโt fall through the cracks.
- Sales
Sales roles were and always will be client facing. But companies need to look past the model of conducting all of their business from a centralised office in a heavily populated urban area and instead look to spreading their sales people far and wide to expand geographically, a concept which lends itself perfectly to remote working.
Connectivity is also a big element of efficient working for sales roles so technology needs to be embraced to allow for great productivity. The bottom line? As all sales people work towards targets, the very nature of the job is results-driven so it will become apparent very quickly if a role doesnโt lend itself to remote work.
- Software engineering
Not only is software engineering a recession-proof industry to be employed in, it also lends itself to remote work as coding requires intense concentration and focus. This is something many people struggle to achieve when working in an office, especially if itโs open-plan or filled with perks that can sometimes act as a distraction rather than an incentive to work harder.
Software engineering talent is also extremely in-demand, and companies are doing whatever they can to retain their staff, including offering benefits like remote work.
- Customer support
Customer support roles lend themselves perfectly to remote work for a number of reasons. For starters, as the majority of customer support is provided virtually (on the phone or via messaging platforms), all that is needed is the right technology.
Another huge plus is that remote workers can work across various time zones which provides 24/7 access to support, something many businesses struggle to provide if all their employees are located in the same city or territory.
- The job you already have
Apart from the inconvenience of hiring and training new staff, the recruitment process costs companies money, so your manager should be willing to work with you on negotiating new terms if you want to make your role fully remote.
A good way to initiate this process is to ask for a formal meeting where you pitch your move to fully remote work. In your pitch, you should include details about how you would make the transition, including details about how you would communicate with co-workers and clients (if applicable) before outlining a framework that works for both you and the company.
And if your current employer doesnโt want to work with you to make this happen, it could be time for you to look for a fully remote role in a new company. The Silicon Canals Job Board has hundreds of remote positions like the three below.
