5 ways ChatGPT gives you a competitive advantage in job hunting

Last update:

With so many layoffs in tech over the past year, there is a lot of top talent in the labour market. In positive news, great candidates are getting re-hired, with a recent survey finding that 79% of those laid off from a tech company job got a new job within three months of starting their search. Nearly four in 10 of them found jobs in less than a month.

This is reassuring for those looking for their next post-layoff career opportunity, but what else can you do to improve your job search, and gain a competitive edge?

ChatGPT can help. The tech star of the hour, the tool is a natural language processing chatbot driven by AI technology. Millions of people have been having a lot of fun with it thanks to its easy-to-use interface––ask it a question or give it a command, and it will create Limericks, poems and funny stories in seconds.

But there’s quite a bit more ChatGPT can do. It can write code, explain complex topics in plain language, solve mathematical problems––and it can also help you with your CV and cover letters.

Here are five ways you can optimise ChatGPT for your job hunt.

1. Customise your cover letter

It is vital to create custom CVs and cover letters for every job you apply for. But that can take a lot of time plus fine tooth-combing, as the purpose of doing this is to make sure you are including as many keywords from the job description as possible.

Ask ChatGPT to “write a cover letter for a Data Analyst job”, and you’ll get back a surprisingly useful and well-structured letter, to which you can add relevant personal details and experience.

2. Personalise your CV

Creating a new CV for every job you apply for is easily one of the most time-consuming parts of job hunting. Have your current CV to hand and in the prompt box, ask ChatGPT to “personalise my resume for this (job title) role at (company name)”. Also paste in the job ad, plus your existing CV. Et voila––a specific CV for the role.

3. Generate keywords

If you prefer to write your own CV, then you can simply use ChatGPT to identify the right keywords to add. Paste the job description into the chatbot, and ask it to tell you the three to five most important responsibilities. This delivers actionable keywords to include in your CV.

4. Explain complex terms

The chatbot has other job hunting-related uses too. If unfamiliar terms have cropped up in the job description or requirements, ChatGPT can help: ask it to explain a topic or technical jargon, and it will return a succinct, plain English explanation that can really help you out.

5. Interview questions

ChatGPT can help two ways here: you can ask it to tell you the most common interview questions for a specific job title or job area, or ask it to generate questions to ask at the end of the process. You could request the most common questions to ask at an interview, or ask for suggestions based on the job description, which you can paste in to give context.
