Europe is one of the main stages for deep tech startups. Though several deep tech startups are emerging from most of the European countries, however, the Netherlands dominates the deep tech ecosystem with numerous entrepreneurs and startups having their origin in the Dutch land.
Today, we take a look at 8 best deep tech startups in the Netherlands that have received highest funding so far in 2018, based on a report by Dealroom.co.
#1 SecurityMatters
Recently, SecurityMatters created headlines as it was acquired by ForeScout for a deal of €100 million ($113 million). The cybersecurity company claims that this acquisition will reinforce its agentless device visibility and control and expand its capabilities.
Supported by leading accelerator in Europe, the EIT Digital, SecurityMatters was founded in 2009 by Damiano Bolzoni, Emmanuele Zambon and Sandro Etalle. It has raised a funding of €4.4 million ($5 million) from Emerald Technology Ventures, KPN Ventures, Robert Bosch Venture Capital and Phoenix Contact Innovation Ventures in 2016 so far.
#2 Framer
Recently, the Dutch design prototyping startup Framer raised €21 million ($24 million) investment in a series B funding. The investment came from a European Venture Capital firm Atomico along with AngelList and Accel. It was announced that this investment will be used for the further development of its design tool Framer X.
Framer was founded in 2013 by ex-Facebookers Koen Bok and Jorn Dijk in Amsterdam. And, in December 2017, the startup raised €6.8 million ($7.7 million) in a funding round led by Accel, AngelList, Designer Fund and Foundation Capital. The startup has so far received €30 million ($33 million) funding.
#3 Lone Rooftop
Lone Rooftop, a Dutch proptech platform secured €2.2 million funding from venture capital firm Nimbus Ventures a few days back. The startup intends to use this investment for its global expansion in the US and other markets. Eventually, it will help the startup to become a leading space utilisation platform. With this funding round, the company has raised a total of €2.8 million investment.
Lone Rooftop was founded in 2014 by Marcel Lamers, Reinoud Elhorst and Jeroen Coumans in Amsterdam. It helps the large enterprises in tackling inefficiency and optimising the space utilisation by up to 20%. All this is done using the company’s PIE platform.
#4 Blockdata
Founded in 2018 by Jonathan Knegtel, Lucas Schweiger, Niels Lucker and Bob van Ratingen, Amsterdam-based Blockdata raised €200k angel round from unknown investors. The Dutch startup provides high-quality data on blockchain projects. Blockdata aims to map the blockchain ecosystem and provide reliable and unbiased information on blockchain projects.
#5 MRIguidance
MRIguidance, a former UtrechtInc participant secured a seed investment of €1.5 million from Health Innovations, a healthcare investor in October this year. This investment will be channelled for the development and rollout of BoneMRI, which is a software providing unparalleled 3D visualisation of the bone anatomy. Notably, MRIguidance was founded in 2016 by MR physicist Peter Seevinck, image scientist Marijn van Stralen and entrepreneur Roel Raatgever.
#6 Elastic
In October this year, Elastic announced the pricing of its IPO. On the first day of trading, its value almost doubled from €31 ($36) to almost €62 ($70). The company raised a funding of €223 million ($252 million). Elastic is used by organisations such as Goldman Sachs, eBay, Cisco, NASA, Mayo Clinic, Microsoft, Wikipedia, Verizon and The New York Times.
Elastic was founded in 2012 by Shay Banon, Anthony Nemitz, Steven Schuurman and Thomas Steinacher in Amsterdam. Till date, the Dutch startup has raised nearly €315 million ($356 million) investment three rounds of funding before the IPO.
#7 Wonderflow
Wonderflow is a Dutch customer feedback analysis startup. It raised €1.5 million investment from Programma 102. With this investment, the startup intends to strengthen its position in Europe, foster the development of its analytics technologies. It was founded in 2014 by Michele Ruini and Ricaardo Osti in Amsterdam and has raised an overall funding of €2.1 million till date.
#8 SMART Photonics
In September 2018, SMART Photonics raised €6 million in an equity investment round from informal investors. With this investment, the Eindhoven-based startup aims to improve its stability and robustness and pave the path towards setting up a full production plant. SMART Photonics is the world’s first foundry for Indium Phosphide photonics semiconductors. It was founded in 2012 by Richard Visser and Robert Feelders. Till date, this startup has raised €13.5 million funding in Series A and Series B funding rounds.
