A phone on a café table rarely looks like a decision.

It looks practical. Someone might call. The map, payment app and family group chat all live in the same rectangle, so placing it beside the cutlery can feel no more significant than putting down your keys.

I understand that instinct. Running businesses across time zones has trained me to treat availability as responsibility. Yet when a phone stays within reach, part of the conversation can feel conditional, as though the person opposite has my attention until something more urgent arrives.

A field experiment published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology put that ordinary moment to a careful test. Groups of friends and relatives ate together at a local café. Half kept their phones on the table; half put them away.

The phones were used for only a modest share of the meal. Still, the group with access to them reported less enjoyment and more distraction. The result is not proof that a visible phone ruins every dinner. It is evidence that small interruptions can alter an experience before we think of ourselves as interrupted.

The experiment was designed to hide what it was testing

Ryan Dwyer, Kostadin Kushlev and Elizabeth Dunn recruited 304 people, aged 19 to 69, from the University of British Columbia and the wider Vancouver community. Participants arrived in groups of three to five friends or family members for what they were told was a study of dining out.

Each whole group was randomly assigned to one of two conditions. In the phone condition, diners were told they would receive a study question by text after ordering, so they should leave their phones on the table with the ringer or vibration switched on. In the phoneless condition, they were told the question would arrive on paper, and were asked to silence their phones and place them in a container on the table.

That cover story kept participants from knowing phone use was the real subject, reducing the chance that they would report what they believed the researchers wanted to hear.

The meal was also videotaped using a small, visible camera. Two coders later measured how much of the session each person spent interacting with a phone. After eating, participants privately rated their enjoyment, distraction, boredom and several other aspects of the experience.

The study was preregistered, and its analysis accounted for the fact that people had been assigned in groups.

A few minutes of phone use shifted the whole meal

The video coding showed that diners with phones available interacted with them for an average of 11 per cent of the session. Those who had put their phones away still registered about 1 per cent, presumably because the separation was not perfectly absolute.

So this was not a meal spent scrolling. Roughly nine-tenths of the time in the phone condition involved no observed phone interaction.

Even so, the phone group rated interest and enjoyment at 4.98 on a seven-point scale, compared with 5.36 in the phoneless group. They also reported more distraction, 2.84 versus 2.38. Those modest differences were statistically detectable under the study’s preregistered threshold.

Boredom needs more careful wording. It averaged 2.21 with phones and 1.93 without them. The result pointed towards slightly greater boredom, not relief from boredom, but its p-value of .035 missed the study’s stricter adjusted threshold of .0278. The paper therefore described it as marginal.

Several other individual outcomes, including social connectedness and mood, did not differ reliably between the two conditions. When the authors combined the outcomes, the overall effect was small. They explicitly wrote that phones may have minimal negative effects on any single interaction.

That restraint is important. The study found a subtle average cost, not a social catastrophe hidden beside the salt.

Distraction did more explanatory work than the phone itself

The researchers tested distraction and opportunity cost, the possibility that a phone reminds diners of other people and tasks competing for attention.

Distraction was the explanation supported by the analysis. Having phones available increased reported distraction, and greater distraction was associated with lower enjoyment. Opportunity cost did not show the same pattern.

Mediation analysis cannot turn a questionnaire into a scan of the mind. It does suggest a plausible sequence: access encouraged brief phone use, which divided attention and made the meal a little less absorbing.

The same paper included a second, non-experimental study. For a week, 123 university students received five surveys a day about the previous 15 minutes. Across 1,244 episodes involving face-to-face socialising, participants reported more distraction, less enjoyment, worse mood, less connection and more boredom when they had also used their phones.

Because phone use was not randomly assigned in that second study, it cannot establish cause. Perhaps people reached for their phones during weaker interactions. The pattern reappeared across daily life, but its direction remains uncertain.

Phone use and phone presence are not the same claim

It is tempting to reduce the finding to “a phone on the table drains your attention”. The experiment cannot cleanly prove that.

The phone condition changed several things at once. Phones were visible, alerts remained possible and participants actually used the devices more. The study therefore tested access plus use, not pure presence while every phone remained untouched.

The broader literature is mixed. A 2020 meta-analysis of 43 studies found robust negative perceptions when someone used a phone during an interaction, but not a “mere presence” effect across the smaller group of presence studies. A 2024 meta-analysis of smartphone presence and cognition, covering 33 studies and 4,368 participants, also found no significant overall effect.

Those results narrow the café experiment’s interpretation. A visible phone may create an opportunity to disengage, and actual use can carry social meaning, but an inert device does not automatically consume a fixed amount of brainpower.

I have written before about not beginning the morning with a phone. The useful principle is similar here: changing access can change behaviour. It is not evidence that the object itself has mystical power.

Later experiments found related costs in other social settings

In a preregistered waiting-room experiment, pairs of strangers with access to their phones showed fewer smiles, including fewer Duchenne smiles, than pairs whose phones had been removed. Trained coders who did not know the hypothesis rated the video, giving the result a behavioural measure rather than another self-report.

A 2023 registered experiment placed small groups of unacquainted students in a recreation room for 20 minutes. Groups with phone access socialised less and reported a worse overall experience. The researchers had expected phones might at least help during the awkward opening minutes, but detected no such early benefit.

Another experiment found that being repeatedly “phubbed”, ignored in favour of a phone, could reduce mood, basic-need satisfaction and trust. That work focuses on the person opposite the phone user, while the café study focused mainly on diners’ own experience. Together they show why attention is both cognitive and relational. A glance can divide my focus and also tell you where you stand.

This helps explain why being able to share silence without reaching for a phone can feel safe. Presence becomes visible when an easy exit is available and neither person takes it.

The useful response is a visible boundary, not a purity test

The research does not require a household ban, a digital detox or a performance of moral superiority whenever someone checks a message.

Phones can add to a meal. They let us show a photograph, translate a menu, arrange transport or include someone who could not be there. The cost is more likely when the device pulls one person out than when everyone uses it together.

A practical experiment is to choose one meal and make the boundary visible. Put the phone in a bag, not face down beside the plate. If an urgent call may arrive, say so at the beginning. A 2026 experiment found that giving an important reason for unavoidable phone use improved perceived interaction quality. Explanation does not restore lost attention, but it can prevent ambiguity from becoming rejection.

It is also worth resisting the belief that every lull needs filling. In seven experiments, digital switching intended to escape boredom ended up increasing boredom during online video viewing. That is different from conversation, but it supports a possibility raised by the café study: fragmented attention can make an experience feel less engaging, then tempt us to fragment it again.

This is one reason time with people can still leave us wanting a real conversation. Physical proximity is only the setting. Connection asks us to stay available to what happens inside it.

The best conversations are not uninterrupted because they never pause. They are uninterrupted because both people allow a pause to remain part of the conversation.

A phone-free meal will not manufacture intimacy, and a phone on the table will not erase it. Attention has edges. Moving one device beyond reach can make them easier to keep around the person already there.
