When it comes to finding a job in the Netherlands, Amsterdam is probably the best bet. In recent years, the capital city has become a hub for domestic and international businesses.
A new report from Dealroom, in partnership with StartupAmsterdam, has shown that tech companies account for a significant portion of the Dutch capitalโs jobs.
Here are the five key takeaways from the report!
Tech companies accounts for 78K jobs in Amsterdam
Dutch-founded tech companies are responsible for 44,000 jobs while international companies, including Tesla, Amazon, and Netflix are linked to 34,000 positions.
Amsterdam startups are creating more positions in various areas, from operations and sales to marketing and HR. The number of people employed by Amsterdamโs startup sector keeps growing, states the report.
Jobs are driven by younger companies
The report states that startup job growth in Amsterdam is disproportionately driven by younger companies, despite numerous unicorn employers.
Dutch startups under five years account for half of all local jobs created since January 2020. But older companies founded before 2010 still account for a majority (52 per cent) of tech jobs in Amsterdam, says the report.
Thomas van Til, VP Marketing at Founda, says, “Hiring new people and growing the team is exciting, but also comes with its own challenges of constantly communicating our vision and plans for the future.”
Startups = resilient job creation engine
COVID-19 has impacted every sector in one way or the other. Some areas such as Foodtech and Healthtech have seen an unprecedented acceleration of digital adoption, while other sectors, including Travel, Events, Marketing, and HR tech are seeing understandable contraction.
In certain areas where digital adoption was accelerated by the pandemic, it resulted in +20 per cent year-on-year job growth, indicates the report.
With overall startup jobs growing +6.6 per cent in 2020 and 2021, faster than any individual sector, the data demonstrates that startups are a resilient job creation engine, even in the most challenging of conditions.
Beyond technical talent
The demand for talent in startups is however not limited only to technical talent. The report says the startups are creating roles in diverse areas, from data and development to sales, marketing, and product management.
James Lesner, Head of Recruitment at Catawiki, says, “Weโre recruiting heavily across all areas of the business with the most volume in Tech, Customer Experience, and of course, our Experts who review and select only the best items for our auctions.”
Impact-focused startups all the way
Job creation is also accelerating at impact-focused startups, which now account for 8.6 per cent of startup jobs in Amsterdam, up from 4.6 per cent in 2018. According to a previous Dealroom report, impact startups attract a higher number of applications per position than non-impact startups.
Roline Spijkervet, Head of Talent Acquisition at Picnic, says, “Diversity starts with understanding the why, what, and when. The most important thing for us is to combine the purpose of Picnic with the ambition to build a diverse team that strives towards our ambitious goals.”
