Amsterdam-based e-bike manufacturer VanMoof on Tuesday announced its first high-speed e-bike dubbed VanMoof V. The company’s newest addition will sit alongside the popular S3 and X3 series.
The announcement comes a month after VanMoof secured $128M (approx €108M) in Series C minority investment in a funding round.
According to the company, VanMoof V is capable of hitting speeds of up to 50 km/h or 31 mp/h, faster than the company’s current e-bikes which are capped at 25km/h in Europe and 20mph in the US.
“The VanMoof V is our first hyperbike, an e-bike dedicated to higher speed and longer distance. I believe this new type of high-speed e-bike can fully replace scooters and cars in the city by 2025,” says Ties Carlier, Co-Founder of VanMoof.
Equipped with dual motors
VanMoof V features two-wheel drive, front and rear suspension, thicker tires, and a new frame design. The hyperbike will come fitted with motors in both the front and rear wheel hubs and will be powered by a hulking 700Wh battery, reports The Verge.
The company will use intelligent motor control to enhance traction for safety and performance. The Dutch company says the latest e-bike will also come equipped with its signature technologies, including the Turbo Boost, Kick Lock for keyless locking, automatic gear shifting, and Theft Defense.
VanMoof intends to work with city governments during the hyperbike’s development phase to explore solutions from geofencing to revised speed regulations, the company said in a press release.
“We’re calling for policies designed around people, rethinking how public spaces can be used if not occupied by cars. I am getting very excited thinking about what a city could look like in the near future, and we are very proud to be part of the change by building the right tools for the transition,” Carlier said.
Registration and pricing
Currently, in the engineering stage, the VanMoof V is available for invite-only reservations from today, with first deliveries expected by the end of 2022. The VanMoof V will initially be sold in the Netherlands, Germany, France, the UK, the US, and Japan for £3498 (€3498/$3498).
For a wider audience, reservation codes will be shared periodically via a waitlist on vanmoof.com. Reserving the VanMoof V for €20/$20/£20 means you can be one of the first to ride it when it’s ready for the roads.
