This Bulgarian startup plans to cut air freight cost by half with giant cargo drone

Meet Dronamics!

Founded by Konstantin Rangelov and Svilen Rangelov in 2014, Dronamics is a Sofia aerospace startup developing a new type of cargo airplane – unmanned and extremely fuel-efficient – for use in emerging markets.

The Black Swan

The company is on a mission to democratize airfreight and lower the cost of shipping. The aerospace startup is developing the cargo UAV ‘The Black Swan’​ that can transport 770 lbs at 1,550 miles at a price that’s 50 percent lower than with traditional cargo aircraft.

Less than a sports car!

Furthermore, it uses a gasoline engine, and a single nose-mounted propeller can be monitored remotely through satellite. It could easily fly twelve hours without refueling can be serviced literally anywhere in the land. Notably, the cost of the whole system costs less than a sports car.

It’s worth mentioning that the ‘Black Swan’ prototype (1:4 scale with a 13-foot wingspan) completed its test flight at unused military and civilian airfields across Bulgaria a couple of years back. Moreover, the company built Black Swan with affordable composite materials with neat aerodynamics in mind.

Tie-up with local industries

The company is starting with domestic air networks in African, Asian, and Latin American countries taking advantage of the multitude of small airfields that are often unused.

Further, Dronamics is planning to tie-up with local industries to provide a valuable lifeline of getting goods in and out of small and remote communities within hours at a half the cost.

This aerospace startup is targeting primarily businesses that need transportation of pharmaceutical supplies, e-commerce packages, healthcare, and agricultural production. Also, Dronamics already has 3 airlines (easyJet in the UK, a top 3 airline in China and a top 3 airline in Japan) ready to do trials with the company by the end of 2019/2020.
