Irish tech startup SureWash has launched an augmented reality app that will ensure health professionals, general public, and workers are washing their hands correctly as suggested by the World Health Organisation (WHO) during the COVID-19 outbreak.
The Trinity Collect Dublin spin-out was set up 10 years ago and has been working with 200 hospitals and a slew of sports organisations across the world to help them implement hand hygiene training systems. It was meant to help workers and professionals to memorise essential motions required for complete handwashing. Given the current global health situation, the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, the startup has launched the platform to the general public.
SureWash app promotes hygiene
SureWash app uses an interactive software system and augmented reality to provide training technology suggested by WHO’s hand hygiene protocol. The startup is a founding member of the WHO Private Organisations for Patient Safety (POPS). It helps WHO to promote safe hand hygienic practices in healthcare. This app is similar to the kiosks that are meant to train healthcare staff. It was launched so that hospitals can use this an extension of the training they were engaged in. Originally, SureWash was set up in response to the global epidemics – MERS and SARS. And, WHO estimates suggest that nearly 50% of the infections could be prevented with better hygienic practices.
How does it work?
SureWash app opts the live video option to measure the handwashing techniques of people and give real-time feedback on their technique. On using the app continuously, users’ muscle memory will learn the correct actions and WHO’s standard of handwashing will be registered in users’ minds.
Notably, the Irish startup claims that it takes nearly 23 practice sessions over two weeks to build the muscle memory properly and it takes time to master the handwashing technique. With gamifying, the process becomes much more fun and easier. SureWash notes that the app can be used by employers to protect their workplaces, especially when it comes to food and pharma production industries.
