Delft-based Loop Biotech, an initiator and builder of the world’s first ‘living’ coffin, a sustainable alternative to the traditional coffin, announced on Thursday that it has raised €2M in funding in 2 weeks through crowdfunding.
Last month, the company announced the commencement of its crowdfunding campaign on Invesdor, the largest platform for sustainable projects in Europe.
The campaign aimed to attract investors interested in organic life and ran for two weeks. The shares started at €250, and strategic partners, including Limbraco and Orange Wings Investments a.o. had already deposited €500,000.
‘We’re incredibly grateful and excited to welcome all our new 1000+ shareholders. Together, we’ve achieved this milestone, and together, we aim to achieve many more. Thank you for believing in our mission to enrich nature. Let’s go BIG together,” says Bob Hendrikx, CEO & Founder of Loop Biotech.
What does Loop Biotech solve?
Loop Biotech is addressing the growing demand for biodegradable funeral products. The sustainable coffin, urn, and carrier are living objects made from upcycled hemp and mycelium, the underground root network of mushrooms.
Bob Hendrikx discovered the potential of mycelium – the root network of mushrooms – during his material research at TU Delft. Mycelium converts both toxins as well as dead, organic materials into valuable nutrients for nature. It turned out to be the perfect material for, and therefore, the driving force behind, the self-composting, natural coffin.
A Loop coffin is grown in seven days and, in ideal conditions, fully absorbed by nature in only 45 days. This burial method then forms an organic source for new life.
New partner Limbraco, an international leader in turn-key mushroom farms and sustainable climate technology, is helping Loop to scale up.
Loop Biotech: Restoring balance
Founded in 2020 by Bob Hendrikx, Loop Biotech aims to restore balance with nature by providing eco-friendly solutions for everyday products on an international scale, starting with the funeral industry.
The company’s product, Loop Living Cocoon, is a sustainable alternative to the traditional coffin. It contributes to the efficient composting of a body, thus providing an enriched nutrient medium for trees and plants.
Additionally, the company also launched a carrier (Loop ForestBed), and an urn (Loop EarthRise).
“We aim to make Loop products accessible for everyone and every budget. Demand is growing, and we want to expand our factory to produce faster, better, and cheaper. To do that, we have to upscale. Also, we want to inspire people to feel more comfortable thinking and speaking about death. We offer a new view on funeral products: sustainability, design, and good for both people and the planet. A growing number of people are purchasing their vouchers now for a Loop funeral product to use later. Together we can make the earth more livable – for us and for generations to come. Let’s close the loop,” adds Hendrikx.
