Last update:

Netherlands-based Delft IMP (Intensified Materials Production), a company that offers consultancy, research & development services, raises €10M in its Series A round of funding from Nordic venture capital firm Sandwater and Invest-NL.

Delft IMP says it plans to accelerate its nano-coating technology process to industrial-scale to enable more durable batteries and other sustainable applications.

Delft IMP overview

Founded in 2014, Delft IMP offers research & development services and licensing of IP on scalable production of nanostructured materials using atomic layer deposition (ALD).

ALD is a chemical deposition method to obtain conformal coatings of controllable thickness on many types of substrate. Together with the Delft IMP intellectual property and know-how on scalable production of nanostructured materials, it allows for efficient precursor use for catalysts, encapsulation of battery particles for improved durability, controlled release of medication, and many more applications.

The company is co-developing applications and selling production units at an industrial scale to meet coating needs for a large variety of powders.

The company says it is developing ultra-thin coatings on powders through its proprietary technology to produce these materials. The ultra-thin nanocoatings protect, for example, battery powder from harsh surroundings and thus enhances the lifetime of the battery.

The Delft IMP application technology enables them to control the process to optimise the film thickness and reduce the use of scarce raw materials.

Dr. Roderik Colen, CEO of Delft IMP, says, “We are solving the big problems in the world, by going very small: We are applying ultra-thin coatings on powder material and enable production at scale with a unique technology originating from the Delft University of Technology.”

The company claims that the benefit of the Delft IMP technology comes from the way they are able to scale up the atomic layer deposition (ALD) based coating process to an industrial scale. This makes it possible to deliver this benefit cost-effective to a wide range of battery applications, supporting the electrification of mobility.

The company works together with battery companies to extend the lifetime of batteries and reduce the consumption of scarce minerals. This facilitates the sustainable use of raw materials, and will also bring performance improvements to other technologies such as electrolysers and fuel cells.
