It goes without saying that depending on the circumstances, some companies perform better than others. For example, the video conferencing platform Zoom grew exponentially since the lockdown commenced and people started working from home. Similarly, food delivery is another segment where companies did well. One of the well-known names in this segment is the Finnish food delivery company Wolt, which has now secured €7.5M from serial entrepreneur Lukasz Gadowski.

Delivery Hero co-founder invests in Wolt

With the latest investment of €7.5M from the Delivery Hero co-founder, Wolt has now raised €267 million in total, till date. Led by co-founder and CEO Miki Kuusi, Wolt employs over 1500 people currently. Existing investors in the unicorn include ICONIQ Capital, Highland Europe, 83North, EQT Ventures, Inventure, Lifeline Ventures, Goldman Sachs Growth Equity, Supercell founder & CEO Ilkka Paananen, and Nokia chairman Risto Siilasmaa, among others.

“This investment isn’t about the money, rather it’s about joining forces with Lukasz. As one of the co-founders of Delivery Hero, Lukasz knows the ins and outs of our industry and he has first-hand knowledge in how we can become an international brand,” says Miki Kuusi, CEO and co-founder of Wolt.

Lukasz Gadowski is not only the co-founder of Delivery Hero, but he has served in the same capacity at Spreadshirt. He is also a co-founder and MD at Team Europe Management. The entrepreneur is also a co-founder at Point Nine Capital and has also served as an advisor.

Wolt’s a unicorn with internal operations

Wolt is a unicorn that has raised a sizable amount of funding, as mentioned earlier. The company was founded in Helsinki, Finland, back in 2014 and it now operates in 23 countries and in over 100 cities. Using its proprietary technology, the company  optimises logistics in real-time, which enables food delivery in a more efficient manner.

The company serves food from over 20,000 restaurants with over 40,000 courier partners. Back in June 2019, the company raised €142M, when its primary focus was on smaller markets, unlike other bigger food delivery companies such as Deliveroo.

Most recently, Wolt launched in Germany this August. “I was looking for ways to make the food delivery scene in Germany better. Our paths crossed with Miki and I was impressed by Wolt as a company,” comments Gadowski.
