This AI virtual clinic wants to help diabetics control their condition in quarantine

Currently, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected nearly 150 countries leaving over 2.2 million people have been infected. While healthy people might not be at a high risk of certain complications due to the virus, however those who suffer from ailments are more vulnerable to it. As per the CDC, those who have chronic medical conditions such as diabetes are a high risk of developing further complications on contracting COVID-19.

Hence, diabetic patients should not skip routine visits to their doctors and should follow their treatment and medications without fail. But given the lockdown restrictions in many countries, it could be challenging for people with diabetes to visit healthcare professionals on a timely basis. This is where startups like DreaMed Diabetes come into the picture.

Founded in 2014 by Revital Nimri, Eran Atlas, and Moshe Phillip, DreaMed Diabetes’ is an Israeli tech startup that offers remote-care virtual clinics to help people with diabetes in these tough circumstances. The virtual diabetes clinic lets people suffering from the ailment receive reliable and easy treatment from a distance so that they are safe from potential infection.

Efficient virtual diabetes clinics

DreaMed Diabetes lets patients suffering from diabetes get medical assistance right from the comfort of their home with virtual clinics. These virtual clinics need no physical interaction with the healthcare professionals and let them stay safe from the possibilities of contracting the COVID-19 infection by visiting public areas. The virtual clinic service will make use of DreaMed Advisor decision support tech to enhance the insulin management treatment of patients.

Certified algorithm for diabetes patients

Notably, DreaMed Advisor is an advanced decision-support tool, which will generate insulin-delivery recommendations by analysing the insulin and glucose data of patients using the platform’s algorithm. DreaMed’s solution was evaluated at a multi-center study at Joslin Diabetes Center, the University of Florida, Yale University, and Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes, and received a CE Mark and FDA clearance.

This is possible as the Advisor applies event-driven adaptive learning that will refine its understanding for each case. The solution provides recommendations to the healthcare provider letting them know how to optimise the insulin pump settings of patients for basal rate, correction factor, and carbohydrate ratio.

The Petah Tikva-based startup raised around €3 million from Norma Investments, Russian businessman Roman Abramovich and one other unnamed angel in 2018.
