Last update:

Enerpoly, a Stockholm-based innovator in zinc-ion battery cell technology, has launched the world’s first zinc-ion battery megafactory.

According to the Swedish startup, this marks a “landmark step” in advancing the global transition to clean energy by providing sustainable, affordable, and safe energy storage solutions.

What will the facility provide?

Enerpoly’s 6,500m² Production Innovation Center (EPIC) facility in Rosersberg, Stockholm, is set to reach a capacity of 100 MWh annually by 2026, with production starting in 2025.

The megafactory will support the co-development of market-ready battery solutions, enabling large-scale pilots for commercial, industrial, and utility applications.

In July 2024, the company acquired advanced dry electrode manufacturing equipment, enhancing production efficiency, reducing costs, and minimising waste. The facility underscores Europe’s progress toward becoming a zinc-ion leader and strengthens Sweden’s position in clean energy innovation, paving the way for future gigafactory plans.

Enerpoly CEO, Eloisa de Castro says, “Our new manufacturing facility marks a pivotal moment in our journey toward revolutionising the energy industry. With EPIC, our focus is firmly on driving sustainable innovation and meeting the growing demand for renewable energy storage.”

“By scaling up our production, we can deliver first-of-all-kind deployments in partnership with utilities and battery system integrators across Europe and globally.”

Brief about Enerpoly

Enerpoly, a deep tech company, develops zinc-ion battery cells and packs using patented technology to support the global transition to renewable energy. The company’s batteries, based on research at Stockholm University, are designed for grid storage, backup power, and safety-critical applications.

To help meet COP28 goals, Enerpoly uses European equipment and abundant local materials like zinc and manganese, aiming to strengthen Europe’s energy resilience and diversification.

Founded in 2018 by Eloisa de Castro, Dr. Mylad Chamoun and Dr. Samer Nameer, Enerpoly has raised €15.1M to date. It secured several key grants to advance its zinc-ion battery technology.

In February 2023, Enerpoly partnered with EET on a Eurostars-3 project, receiving up to €870K in grants to develop a household energy storage device. Later, in October 2023, the company was awarded a $600K grant from Vinnova to optimise battery production.

In December 2023, the Swedish Energy Agency granted $8.4M for the world’s first zinc-ion battery megafactory, marking the start of Enerpoly’s plans to finance the production plant and attract further investment through a Series A funding round.

Earlier in July 2024, Enerpoly acquired former competitor Nilar’s end-to-end battery production line and process development capabilities to boost its industrial expertise. The company also announced that it is scaling to meet the growing demand for flexibility in Europe’s energy system with key senior hires.

Annika Werneman, former Head of Manufacturing at Northvolt, joined as Head of Production. Emelie Tillegård, with experience from Northvolt and Ericsson, became Head of Industrialisation. Daniel Eklund, previously with KP Energy and ABB, took on the role of Purchasing Manager.
