Facebook’s chief AI scientist backs €4M funding of this French music startup

Paris-based startup Antescofo has created a digital orchestra called Metronaut by combining music with AI. The startup has endured €4 million fund infusion supported by Facebook’s chief AI scientist Yann Le Cun and former Sony Corporation CEO Nobuyuki Idei.

Other angel investors involved in the round include L’Oréal’s senior executive Sophie Gasperment and Thibault Viort, CEO of new businesses for AccorHotels Group. Besides, venture capital firms Daphni and OneRagTime have also participated in the funding drive.

Metronaut – a digital orchestra app

Metronaut is an AI-driven application that creates a real-time professional orchestra smartly synced to the instruments played by users. The magical app catches the users’ music through device microphone and automatically balance the tempo of other virtual instruments.

By means of machine listening, Antescofo incorporated live music performances to play instrumentals. Besides, it lets users practice any instrument and scores accordingly.

Founded in 2016, Antescofo’s innovative technology is the outcome of an immense R&D work involving more than 7 years in IRCAM Paris, the world’s largest laboratory dedicated to music and technology. Metronaut not just facilitates musicians but also singers with professional instrumental harmony.

Users can download Metronaut app for free and play it for 10 minutes per month without spending a single penny. Further, Antescofo is leveraging on the monthly subscription model starting with $10 for unlimited service.

Focus on content

Antescofo will utilise the fresh capital in updating and widening its musical content. The startup is looking forward to craft Metronaut an imperative service for musicians.

Antescofo CEO Laurent Tran Van Lieu elucidated, “The new funds will allow us to strengthen our position as an innovative actor in the music industry, grow internationally, notably into China, and will enable Antescofo to build up Metronaut’s catalogue of accompaniments, so we can satisfy our users.”
