Last update:

Amsterdam-based Finch Buildings, a company in the real-tech sector, says buildings are a part of the solution to the climate problem. According to the EU, the construction sector is responsible for over 35 per cent of the EU’s total waste generation. The company believes that wooden buildings are the solution.

In a recent development, Belgium-based AMAVI Capital has invested €1M in Finch Buildings and will work together to help the realtech scale-up take the step from linear to exponential growth.

About Finch Buildings

Founded in 2014 by Jurrian Knijtijzer, according to the company’s buildings, the sustainable living must become available to everyone in order to make the greatest possible impact – which is lowering the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere and hence contributing to the restoration of the balance on the planet.

Finch Buildings claims to be ahead of the market with its modular and circular platform since its inception. The scale-up is now accelerating the development of its platform and thus increasing its lead as a timber builder. The innovations and technology that Finch develops are available to architects and developers through the Finch Buildings system platform and can therefore be adopted by the market more quickly. In doing so, it believes it contributes to the shift to sustainable construction as a common good.

Disrupting the construction industry

According to Finch Building, the construction sector is responsible for 23 per cent of global CO2 emissions, 40 per cent of energy consumption, and 40 per cent of demolition waste. The realisation of an average construction project in the Netherlands takes between 7 and 10 years.

With the investment, AMAVI capital believes that the real estate sector can operate efficiently and faster with the ‘Finch Platform’, as it is fulfilling circular, off-site, and CO2-positive construction.

According to a press release, half of the resources that arrive at the construction site are thrown away and on average 1/3rd of the tasks have to be performed again. However, Finch Buildings’ modular buildings are produced in a controlled factory environment, so that everything is delivered on time, within budget, and without errors.

Finch Buildings is working on buildings that have been developed in a modular way and can adapt to different environments and circumstances. The company has developed a platform for this; a library of standard components with which buildings can be “composed”. Finch’s modules are made of solid wood (CLT or “Cross Laminated Timber”). This material is fully renewable and circular as well as creates a healthy living environment for its users.

In the Netherlands, the modules are assembled by De Groot Vroomshoop, part of Volker Wessels. The projects built with the Finch modules are multi-storey buildings such as apartment complexes, office buildings, or hotels. The system currently makes it possible to develop buildings up to sixteen storeys high. In addition, In the Netherlands, Finch Buildings has realised approx 1,000 modules, including the modules that are planned for 2021.

Use of the capital

With this investment, Finch Buildings can now plan to invest in its platform and build a network to become active outside the Netherlands. Serving the Belgian market – where circular construction is high on the agenda – is the company’s first step towards further internationalisation.

Jurrian Knijtijzer, the founder of  Finch Buildings, is pleased with this next step, he says “AMAVI Capital offers Finch Buildings more than an investment. It is an active partner that uses its network to actively assist the companies in which it invests. We look forward to building our impact together with them. The days of pioneering are behind us, now we are going to scale.”

Frederic Van den Weghe, Partner at AMAVI, adds, “There is more concrete mass than biomass in this world and Finch wants to change that: Finch’s system concept with solid wood is highly scalable and offers answers to the growing need for high-quality and sustainable homes, offices, schools, and healthcare real estate, and thanks to its modular character, both as a temporary solution and permanently.”

The company is currently looking at first projects in Belgium and intends to conquer other markets such as France, Germany, and the UK.
