Amsterdam-based HealthSage AI, an open platform for generative AI in healthcare, has secured a €3M seed funding to expand and scale its open platform.

The oversubscribed round was led by Peak, alongside investments from Healthy.Capital, Rubio Impact Ventures, and health tech entrepreneurs Jaap Maljers and Jeroen Tas.

Johan van Mil, co-founder & managing partner at Peak, says, “Given the opportunity to improve diagnostic accuracy, patient care, and operational efficiency, we see a huge opportunity for AI in the health space.”

“Given the track record of the founders in building and scaling companies in medtech, we see Healthsage AI as the leading player to revolutionise the medical industry.”

Open platform for Generative AI in healthcare

Founded in 2023 by Harm-Jan Wessels and Marcel Alberti, HealthSage AI is focused on transforming healthcare delivery and patient pathways through generative AI technology.

With experience in healthcare and medical software, the founders aim to collaborate with healthcare partners and innovators to drive innovation.

- A message from our partner -

HealthSage AI offers an open, secure, and regulatory-compliant platform, serving as a foundation for various AI applications within the healthcare and open-source community.

Co-founder Wessels says, “Generative AI represents the biggest technology shift that I have witnessed in my career. Using AI, we can help healthcare professionals move away from countless hours of information chasing and clerical tasks, so they can focus on what matters most: patient care.”

HealthSage AI’s platform aims to reduce administrative burdens for healthcare professionals, provide clinical decision support, address staffing shortages with virtual interactions, empower patients with health information, and enable value-based care through insights from clinical data, all while ensuring safety and compliance for healthcare providers and IT vendors.

The startup operates on three key principles: Open, Responsible, and Safe. This includes embracing open-source practices, complying with EU AI regulations, and prioritising privacy and data protection in healthcare applications.

The Note-to-FHIR LLM

On December 1, 2023, HealthSage AI introduced Note-to-FHIR, a specialised Large Language Model (LLM) that turns messy medical notes into organised FHIR data. FHIR is the global standard for sharing electronic healthcare information.

For instance, after using Note-to-FHIR, the organised data can automatically generate a patient summary, providing healthcare professionals with a clear overview of health issues without sorting through unstructured notes. This technology can also streamline administrative tasks like creating discharge letters.

Furthermore, Note-to-FHIR assists in clinical decision-making by enabling healthcare professionals to use structured data for optimal care delivery.

It can also translate intricate clinical notes into patient-friendly language, empowering patients to better understand their healthcare journeys.

In summary, Note-to-FHIR simplifies healthcare by transforming dense clinical notes into clear, actionable information, allowing professionals to focus more on patient care. It integrates into existing systems and supports the development of new healthcare applications by IT vendors.

Capital utilisation

HealthSage AI aims to establish a transparent base for creating and implementing AI applications in healthcare, including its LLM Note-to-FHIR solution.

The funds will support the startup’s team expansion, product commercialisation, and faster customer deployments, benefiting healthcare professionals and patients.
