Hiber becomes AWS Commercial Launch of 2018: How Dutch startup plans to bring IoT connectivity to remote areas?

NewSpace startup Hiber, founded by a team of satellite experts and tech entrepreneurs, has recently bagged the ‘Commercial Startup Launch of 2018’ title from Amazon Web Services (AWS) during the re:Invent conference in Las Vegas. Notably, tech brands including Netflix, Pinterest and Airbnb have also received this prestigious title, earlier.

Also, Hiber officially launched its nanosatellite-powered solution recently. It is reportedly designed to bring the Internet of things (IoT) connectivity to 90 per cent of the world that lacks network. Further, the Netherlands-based start-up was selected from 6000 other entries to launch its solution. The re:Invent event was attended by more than 50,000 participants from the technology world.

Hiber: What all you need to know

Formerly known as Magnitude Space, Hiber is launching its own nanosatellite constellation in space. With offices at Amsterdam and Delft, Netherlands, and Washington DC, U.S., the NewSpace startup is working towards developing a ground-breaking, patent-pending technology with a team of 35 employees. With the till-date funding of €15 million, it plans to soon become Netherlands’ first commercial satellite company.

Nowadays, the Dutch startup is gearing up to launch its nanosatellites – HiberOne from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, India, and HiberTwo from Vandenberg, California, U.S. With a hope to launch dozens of more such satellites, it will meet the enormous demand for IoT-ready data connectivity around the world in the coming 1-2 years.

How nanosatellites will promote IoT-enabled connectivity?

As per the reports, the IoT-enabled network from Hiber is expected to be operational from Q1 2019. Further, the first 25 customers, most of whom are working on technology-related projects will execute the deployment as the network goes live. Certainly, this will help the IoT-enabled network spread its arms and reach more and more people, also in the remote areas, as it currently connects only 10 per cent of the world.

Each of Hiber’s nanosatellites will fly over the earth’s poles 16 times a day and each spot on the equator twice a day. With this, Hiber will be the first one to provide the planet with truly global IoT-connectivity. With a 20 times cheaper process, it works by transferring data from modems and antennas owned by customers directly to the micro-satellites.
