Editorial Policy for Silicon Canals

Our journalistic mission

We’re here to keep you in the loop about what’s happening in European tech. Whether you’re building the next unicorn, writing checks to promising startups, or just trying to stay ahead of the curve, we’ve got you covered with the news, insights, and stories that actually matter to the ecosystem.

Here’s what drives everything we do:

Getting It Right
We obsess over accuracy because we know you’re making real decisions based on what we publish. If we mess up (and occasionally, we do), we’ll fix it fast and tell you exactly what we got wrong. No hiding, no excuses.

Staying Independent
Nobody tells us what to write. Not VCs, not founders, not PR agencies with fancy dinners. Our editorial decisions are ours alone, and we like it that way. It’s the only way to give you the unbiased perspective you need.

Showing All Angles
The startup world isn’t black and white, so neither is our coverage. We’ll show you different perspectives on the big debates, whether it’s about AI regulation, funding winter fears, or the latest unicorn valuation that has everyone talking.

Being Transparent
We’ll always tell you where our information comes from and flag anything that might affect how you should read our content. Sponsored content? We’ll label it clearly. Potential conflicts? You’ll know about them.

Taking Responsibility
We own our content and our mistakes. Got feedback? We want to hear it. Think we missed something important? Please let us know. We’re constantly trying to get better at serving the European tech community.

How We Create Content

Our Editorial Team
We’re tech journalists who actually understand the ecosystem we cover. We know the difference between a bridge round and a Series A, we’ve covered countless funding announcements, and we understand what keeps entrepreneurs up at night. Plus, we’ve got Bella, our AI newsroom, helping us move faster while maintaining quality. (Check out our AI Ethics Statement to see how that works.)

Planning Our Coverage
We’re always watching for the stories that matter to you – from breaking funding news to industry trends that could affect your business. We plan ahead for major events like conferences and earnings seasons, but we’re also ready to pivot when breaking news happens.

Our Voice and Style
We write for people who live and breathe tech, not for general audiences who need everything explained from scratch. You’ll get the context you require without the fluff, and we’ll assume you know what terms like “product-market fit” and “burn rate” mean.

Quality Control
Every piece of content gets reviewed before it goes live. We check facts, verify sources, and make sure everything meets our standards. Whether it’s written by our human journalists or created with Bella’s help, it all goes through the same rigorous process.

Listening to You
We pay attention to what resonates with our readers and what doesn’t. Your engagement, feedback, and comments help us understand what coverage is most valuable to the community.

Our editorial policy

Sources and Verification
We use credible sources and verify information before publishing. Sometimes sources need to stay anonymous (especially in a tight-knit ecosystem like European tech), and we respect that while still maintaining our standards for accuracy.

Avoiding Conflicts
We don’t take money or favours from companies we cover. We don’t invest in startups we write about. We don’t let personal relationships influence our coverage. It’s pretty straightforward – we stay independent, so you can trust what we publish.

Sponsored Content
Every so often, we’ll publish sponsored (partner) content, but only if it’s actually useful for our audience. You’ll always know when something is sponsored – we label it clearly and make sure sponsors don’t get editorial input on regular news coverage.

Corrections and Feedback
Spotted an error? We’ll fix it quickly and transparently. Have a complaint? We’ll address it professionally. We’ve got a clear process for handling issues, and we’re always open to making things right.

GDPR

Of course, we believe GDPR is vital in safeguarding your privacy. We however strongly believe journalistic freedom and integrity outweigh privacy. Do note that as a media company, the journalistic exception to GDPR may therefore apply and article 17 has no merits when it comes to our editorial content. This means we will never remove your personal information from our articles. If you feel this to be erroneous, please direct a formal complaint to the Press Council.
