Södertälje, Stockholm-based Scania, a motor vehicle manufacturer, on Wednesday, November 8, announced a joint venture — JUNA with sennder Technologies, a digital road freight forwarder.
The joint venture aims to advance electric solutions in road logistics across Europe, aligning with the EU’s Green Deal, aiming for climate neutrality by 2050.
JUNA is managed by Matteo Oberto as CEO and Thomas Ertel as CTO, and from the Scania team by Johan Kjellner as COO and André Söderstjerna as CFO.
David Nothacker, CEO of sennder, says, “Given that e-trucks cost two to three times more than diesel trucks and that small carriers own 70 per cent of all trucks in Europe with less than ten trucks, the combination of JUNA’s pay-per-use offering and sennder’s capacity utilisation will effectively remove the barriers to adopting e-trucks.”
Scania x sennder Technologies: A joint venture
Based out of Berlin, JUNA, a Berlin-based company (GmbH), has introduced an innovative pay-per-use model for electric trucks that unlocks large-scale adoption.
By leveraging sennder’s digital platform, JUNA provides carriers with access to electric trucks and guaranteed transport volumes, removing financial obstacles and ensuring commercial predictability for carriers.
Leveraging Scania‘s electric trucks and tailored services and sennder’s proprietary technology, JUNA accelerates the decarbonisation of European road logistics.
As early as 2024, JUNA will significantly increase the presence of e-trucks in Germany by providing up to 100 e-trucks to carriers via JUNA’s pay-per-use model.
By 2030, JUNA aims to deploy 5,000 electric trucks, significantly increasing the current number on the roads.
JUNA’s innovative model offers a comprehensive package, including premium electric vehicles, repair and maintenance services, insurance, digital and electric services, alongside usage-based fees.
Through data analysis, JUNA optimizes electrification strategies and simulates routes to enhance the suitability of electric trucks, effectively mitigating the risks associated with their adoption.
A pilot program was recently launched in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
The program involves a carrier using a JUNA electric truck powered by renewable energy to transport goods for an FMCG shipper and sennder customer in the Stuttgart region, ten weekly deliveries.
Currently, JUNA’s operations rely on existing public charging infrastructure in Germany, with per-kilometer costs comparable to current diesel expenses.
