Last update:

Weeks after announcing the acquisition of 5G specialist Affirmed Networks, Microsoft has announced that it is all set to acquire another company, Metaswitch Networks to strengthen its cloud-based telecoms offering.

The UK-based leading cloud-based communications products provider is used by network operators and carriers. As of now, the terms of the deal remain undisclosed but it depicts the focus on cloud architectures from tech companies and the adoption of emerging network technologies such as 5G.

With this acquisition, Microsoft has the intention to create modern alternatives to network infrastructure and let operators deliver value-added services with lower capital investment and greater cost efficiency that they have already faced in the past. This way, Microsoft will be able to serve operators globally via continued investment in Azure, add additional depth to the hyperscale cloud infrastructure with specialised software required to run virtualised communication functions, applications and networks.

The era of 5G!

As the industry is moving to the next-generation mobile networks, 5G, operators have opportunities to advance the virtualisation of their core networks and adapt to an increasingly cloud-native future. This is where Microsoft will continue to meet the requirements of its users and work together with the industry and let network equipment providers and operators evolve their own operations.

5G, the next-generation mobile connectivity enables advancements in enhanced mobile broadband, massive machine-type communication, and ultra-reliable low-latency communications. It offers significant potential for governments and enterprises and creates new opportunities for network operators. 5G will also provide operators with the chance to speed up service innovation and deliver new transformative experiences that are more resilient, faster, and more secure.

Support to create a diverse telecom ecosystem

Microsoft will continue to support multi-cloud and hybrid-cloud models to create a more diverse telecom ecosystem. It backs an expanded set of unique offerings and greater opportunities for differentiation. Microsoft will continue to team up with emerging innovators, existing suppliers, and network equipment partners to explore expanded opportunities and share roadmaps to work together in areas of RAN (Radio Access Networks), virtualised services, operations support system/business support system modernisation, and more.
