Genk-based MobieTrain, a mobile micro-learning platform for frontline workers, announced on Thursday that it has raised €9M in a fresh round of funding led by new shareholders Fortino Capital and BNP Paribas Fortis Private Equity.

Renaat Berckmoes, partner at Fortino Capital, says, “Only 20 per cent of companies blend HR with operations and IT to improve their deskless working lives. According to recent research, the training market for 2.8 billion global frontline workers is expected to reach $40.1B by 2027, compared to $18.9B in 2022. MobieTrain’s recent, successful expansion in southern Europe underlines its great potential. We look forward to helping MobieTrain on its international journey.”

The round also saw participation from existing investors Concentra, FOM Capital, and LRM.

The Belgian HRtech scale-up says it will use the funds to expand into new European growth markets in the coming months, sustain product development, and innovate the way people learn at work.

Workplace training with mobile-first microlearning

Founded in 2015 by Guy Van Neck, Mireille Van Hemert-Schelling and Willi van Boven, MobieTrain offers a micro-learning app to its clients that empowers employees with daily, bite-sized content to boost knowledge retention and productivity. In simple terms, the app allows companies to design individualised and dynamic learning paths for their employees.

In fact, organisations can use the intelligent microlearning platform to share new information with personnel or refresh their knowledge at a rhythm that suits them in a mobile, flexible, user-friendly, and effective way.

With the use of MobieTrain’s microlearning technology, frontline employees including shop assistants, construction workers, nurses, and logistics staff can easily complete their onboarding and training processes. Short, gamified learning modules for cellphones streamline knowledge retention, boost employee enthusiasm, and simplify information exchanges.

In May 2021, the company raised €4M and then opened branches in Spain and Italy, with the workforce expanding to 53. In March 2020, MobieTrain secured €1.8M.

Expansion in new markets

More than half of MobieTrain’s revenue comes from foreign markets, and it has witnessed triple-digit growth over the past year. The company is now used by more than 100 organisations across 30 nations, including companies like Azadea, Diesel, Emirates Post, Hästens, Odlo, Roompot, VF, and Via Outlet to teach their frontline employees.

MobieTrain CEO, Guy Van Neck, says, “To maintain this rate of growth, we’re strengthening our teams in Genk, Madrid, Milan and Amsterdam, where we opened a new office just last month. We will soon be expanding into Germany, France and the UK too, and starting remote sales from Madrid in other markets such as Scandinavia. This internationalisation should allow us to at least double our turnover every year and consolidate our position as a market leader in Europe.”
