Munich-based Fun with balls is ‘Megan Rapinoe of Startups’: All you need to know about Women’s Innovation World Championship

After weeks of intense matches, the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup came to an end. In the end, the U.S. Women’s National Team lifted the world cup for the fourth time after beating the Netherlands 2-0. It’s worth mentioning that, the USA has now won back-to-back World Cup titles.

Women have busted stereotypes not only in sports but in all walks of life to bring progressive changes. Having said that, women entrepreneurs are increasing in number unlike ever before.

In fact, a lot of female entrepreneurs have been killing it in the startup world. Moreover, an increased number of women-led startups raised a significant amount of money last year to expand their business as well.

Women’s Innovation World Championship!

Celebrating female-led and founded sports tech companies, HYPE Sports Innovation launched the first ‘Women’s Innovation World Championship’ in Lyon, France on July 5th, 2019.

For the uninitiated, HYPE Sports Innovation is the largest global ecosystem for sports innovation with more than 40,000 key industry members.

Winner – Fun with Balls

Among the participating startups, Fun With Balls Announced as Winner of Inaugural Global Sports Innovation Competition at SPOBIS 2019. The winning startup receives a tailor-made mentorship program aiming to generate a pilot with a major sports brand from HYPE’s network.

Munich-based Fun with Balls is merging sports and gaming to become the market leader for a new industry. The company specialises in Sports-Tech and is on a mission to make society more active and to increase participation in sports in the most fun and engaging way,

Cutting-edge technologies from the world of sports!

The Shark Tank-style competition showcased 8 upcoming, cutting-edge technologies from the world of sports including AI Spotter, Kitman Labs, SciSports, FanPictor, Tracktics, Tokabot, and Vogo Sport.

The inaugural event gave each startup 5 minutes to present their pitch participate in a Q&A session with a leading panel judges, including Federico Winer, Head of Entertainment Industries at SAP; Jochen Röttgermann Executive Board Member of Marketing & Sales at vFB Stuttgart; Oke Göttlic, President at FC St.Pauli;  Christoph Winterling, Commercial & Marketing Director FC Bologna; Jürgen Dürr, Founder at Blackroll MD; Ruth Cremer, Speaker, Moderator, Mentor & CEO at Euworx UG; and Franz Koch, COO at Onefootball.

Speaking about the competition, Susanne Kucht, HYPE Sports Innovation Board Member, said:

We’re proud to be organizing the Women’s Innovation World Championship and celebrating female empowerment in the sports business. It’s the first competition in the world dedicated to women-founded sport tech companies, and we’re really looking forward to working with some of the sports industry’s most creative voices.

New capital fund!

HYPE Sports Innovation has recently announced the launch of its new capital fund, which is looking to raise $75 million (€66.7 million) to support sport-tech unicorns. Uli Becker, the ex-president of Reebok, is the chairman of HYPE Capital Fund.

Recently, the fund made two investments in Tokabot, an engagement platform for fans in the sports and entertainment domain and in Fun With Balls, which specializes in software and hardware for sports-based augmented reality solutions.
