  • Some of the most successful companies in the world started off as a side project. Twitter, Groupon, Craigslist and many others are a part of this list. CodeSandbox is one such service that blossomed out of a side project into a full-fledged startup. The startup enables users to easily edit code online, without worrying about setting up the tools that are usually associated with the work. In the latest development, the Netherland-based startup has secured €2.14M in seed funding. Here’s what you need to know about the budding startup.

What is CodeSandbox?

One of the major difficulties while when one is coding for a living or just like to create programs is to set up the coding environment. Do note that the coding environment has nothing to do with your room but the tools required to write programs and test them. Coders usually have to download a bunch of programs like dedicated text editors and sandbox environments and/or frameworks to run the code they will write.

Doesn’t this all sound too much work without getting any actual work done? Well, it is. CodeSandbox was born out of the necessity of providing an environment, which enables programmers to simply start working without having to waste too much time gathering and setting up the tools for coding. The service came into existence as a side project and the startup was founded back in 2017 by Ives van Hoorne and Bas Buursma.

The journey so far

Since its inception, the startup has evolved to deliver multiple new features alongside the core functionality of online code editing. One can create web apps via the service, search through numerous sandboxes on the platform, embed sandbox, pull code directly from Github and share your completed project with a single click. Soon after launch, CodeSandbox grew rapidly and it is said to now cater to over 1.2 million visitors per month.

Funding details

While CodeSandbox managed from donations it received from its patrons, the startup decided to move forward and become more than what it is today. Van Hoorne says that the service should be a “place that people go to share, collaborate and learn as well. To make this possible we decided to raise money from a group of like-minded people.”

CodeSandbox secured €2.14M in its seed round, which was led by Kleiner Perkins. Kleiner Perkins is an American venture capital firm that specialises in investing in startups, and incubations that are at an early stage. Figma and Netlify are two such organisations where the VC firm has previously invested in. Other investors include Arches Capital, Guillermo Rauch (Founder ZEIT), Koen Bok (Co-Founder Framer), Christian Bach & Mathias Biilmann of Netlify, Dylan Field (Co-Founder Figma), Marco Jansen (Co-Founder and former CTO Catawiki), Petri Parvinen (Angel Investor) and Quinn Slack (Co-Founder Sourcegraph).

Future aspirations

With fresh funding, the startup wants to stay grounded and true to its core value of providing new and improved features while lowering the learning curve. It says that the speed and capacity at which new features are introduced, would improve. CodeSandbox is also set to support larger projects, come with extended integrations and improved specific workflows, and be more community friendly.
