On Monday, the Netherlands government, officially launched the ChipNL Competence Centre to strengthen its position in the global semiconductor industry, the Netherlands.

The initiative aims to enhance capabilities and accelerate innovation within the Dutch semiconductor ecosystem, based on the EU Chips Act.

Allocated €12M budget

As a result, the European Commission and the Ministry of Economic Affairs have jointly allocated €12M to the new ChipNL Competence Centre for the next four years.

This four-year project aims to boost the Dutch semiconductor industry by promoting innovation, collaboration, and talent development, which will help strengthen the competitiveness of the Netherlands and Europe in semiconductor technologies.

The ChipNL Competence Centre is part of the European Chips Act.

The EU Chips Act is a comprehensive legislative framework designed to strengthen Europe’s capabilities in the semiconductor industry.

ChipNL Competence Centre: What it is?

The ChipNL Competence Centre acts as a national hub for research and development, bringing together industry, government, and educational institutions.

Its goals are to speed up innovation, develop talent, and strengthen the European semiconductor industry.

The Chipnl Competence Centre is a collaborative effort that brings together prominent organisations, including Brainport Development, ChipTech Twente, High Tech NL, TNO, JePPIX, imec, and regional development companies such as Oost NL, BOM, and InnovationQuarter.

The centre will focus on supporting Dutch SMEs, startups, and scale-ups in the semiconductor sector, as well as related application markets, including chip design, semiconductor production equipment, and quantum technology.

The ChipNL Competence Centre will help businesses access European pilot lines, allowing them to test and validate new technologies in controlled environments.

Additionally, it will create an innovative design platform to facilitate the development of customised semiconductor solutions. TNO, imec, and JePPIX will spearhead these initiatives.

The centre collaborates with the EU Skills Initiatives and the Microchip Talent Empowerment Plan (project Beethoven) to train the right talent for the future.

This program aims to promote new skills and strengthen the semiconductor sector’s labour market.

Brainport Development and ChipTechTwente are the responsible organisations for these activities.

Moreover, the ChipNL Competence Centre will assist companies in securing financing through the EU Chip Fund, which is intended to stimulate innovative projects within the industry.

The organisations responsible for these activities are the ROMs Oost NL, InnovationQuarter and BOM, and High Tech NL. Support will also be provided in areas such as business development, fundraising, and identifying innovation opportunities.
