Top 14 Dutch life science startups taking the industry to next level in 2019

Life sciences or biological sciences is the branch of science involved in the scientific study of life and organisms. This industry that analyses the organisms and the environment around it deploys Artificial Intelligence. Life sciences startups also include medtech startups and these push the boundary of innovation further to take the industry to new levels.

Talking about the European market, there are several life sciences startups that use their technical excellence and bring about new trends in the industry. Eventually, many of these startups have been shortlisted to showcase their innovation at the CES 2020 in Las Vegas in January. Here these life sciences startups have been briefed below.

Why its hot: Arenar is a Dutch tech startup, which operates with the mission to build a tech that will improve sleep and let users experience their dreams. Arenar developed an EEG headband called iBand+ that helps users sleep and induce lucid dreams. The headband is integrated with health tracking sensors to monitor users’ sleep, indicate the sleep quality and give feedback on the users’ mobile via an application.

Why its hot: Crescent Tech provides the world’s first purpose-designed wearable dual-camera headband dubbed Crescent Vision. The headband captures real-time high-quality 3D images and shares the same in real-time. The camera is used as equipment for precision surgical procedures. It shortens the patients’ recovery time and reduces the overall cost.

Why its hot: EatMyRide is a platform that lets you create the ideal food plan for your sport cycling activities. The EatMyRide app lets you predict your nutrition planning by letting you select your route and choose your favourite snacks. That’s it! The app will create a customised nutrition plan for you.

Why its hot: Elitac is a Dutch wearable tech company, which enables wearable innovation by integrating textile and electronics. The company has a wearable lab enabling various partners to develop smart garments with stretchable electronic circuits with facilities including testing, R&D, prototyping, and production of wearables.

Why its hot: Envision is a software platform, which enables visually impaired people to live independently. Backed by Yes!Delft, Envision speaks out the visual world aloud for visually impaired people. This is possible with the help of assistive technology, artificial intelligence, and text recognition tools that can read from the text in over 60 languages from any surface. This way, people with visual problems can shop in supermarkets, read menu cards, and do a lot more independently.

Why its hot: FaceCode aims to improvise the diagnosis and treatment of various skin disorders and diseases with the use of enhanced Face Recognition and Artificial Intelligence. These technologies are combined with pinpointed LED therapy. It is a tailored treatment, which uses contemporary computer technology for the treatment.

Why its hot: Hyko by CareToSave is an intuitive and playful tech meant to improve the lifestyle of families and make their future better. It is a connected polar bear with an app ecosystem and a parenting tool, which is a friend for the kids. The lamp is connected to an app and lets children learn colours, time, environment and how to protect it. It was founded with the intention to save polar bears that are becoming an endangered species.

i-Med Technology (Maastricht)

Why its hot: i-Med Technology is involved in developing a lightweight and unique digital surgical loupe weighing less than Rs. 250 grams. The loupe is equipped with efficient LED lighting and exceptional FHD 3D image quality. This device will be used by surgeons to call up pre-operative diagnostic information along with other aspects. Basically, the digital loupe creates 3D recordings of all that the surgeons see via it.

Why its hot: Microsure is a medical device company focusing on improving the lives of patients via robot systems for microsurgery. Its first product, MUSA is the first surgical robot in the world, which is meant for open microsurgery. It provides superhuman precision and makes new interventions possible.

Why its hot: Mindaffect is a spin-off of the renowned Donders Institute of the Radboud University Nijmegen. Mindaffect has developed a Brain Computer Interface, which lets locked-in patients (those suffering from ALS) interact or communicate by controlling a computer with brain signals. The team works on the cutting-edge of neuroscience and artificial intelligence.

Why its hot: Nightwatch is an all-in-one, cloud-based SEO tool. It lets users easily monitor, analyse, and improve the SEO of a website. It lets users track backlinks, competitors’ performance, keywords, and newest trends using advanced features. The company’s mission is to eliminate restrictions of existing platforms that miss out on flexibility and adjustability while analysing and tracking data sets.

Why its hot: Omnigen believes in the power of DNA technology. It harnesses the power of existing science and works with companies to personalise healthcare. The company is capable of assisting in data analysis, provide consultancy to find out your bioinformatics possibilities and develop custom software solutions.

Why its hot: Propeaq helps athletes across the world by preventing jet lag and getting better sleep in order to boost their energy for a better performing day. Even sleep consultants and night workers find these glasses useful. These glasses will work along with a companion app.

Why its hot: Medtech startup PlasmaCure has developed an innovative treatment called cold plasma pad for healing chronic wounds. It is an electronic pad, which helps wounds heal faster and is less expensive than current treatment options. The objective of the company is to treat a minimum of 200 patients in diverse clinics.
