It’s official! Search engine giant Google has silently teased the Pixel 6 series smartphones setting a narrative ahead of product launch somewhere around October. It seems the leaks, speculations, and renders that have flooded the internet over the past few months were precisely accurate.

If you are an avid tech follower, you should know by now that Google’s strategy has been a bit all over the place ever since the launch of its first Pixel phones in 2016. However, the company might be finally ready to focus and take Pixel smartphones to the next level this year.

Google’s Tensor SoC

Google has confirmed that its upcoming flagship will be named Pixel 6 (6.4-inch) and Pixel 6 Pro (6.7-inch). Secondly, the 2021 Pixel series smartphone will be powered by a new SoC (System on Chip) called Tensor SoC. It’s worth mentioning that the SoC is named after Tensor Processing Units (TPU), which Google uses in its data centres. Taking care of the security is the all-new Titan M2 chip.

So excited to share our new custom Google Tensor chip, which has been 4 yrs in the making (📎 for scale)! Tensor builds off of our 2 decades of computing experience and it’s our biggest innovation in Pixel to date. Will be on Pixel 6 + Pixel 6 Pro in fall. https://t.co/N95X6gFxLf pic.twitter.com/wHiEJRHJwy

“So we set about building a technology platform built for mobile that enabled us to bring our most innovative AI and machine learning (ML) to our Pixel users. We set out to make our System on a Chip (SoC) to power Pixel 6. And now, years later, it’s almost here,” says Rick Osterloh, Senior Vice President, Devices & Services, Google.

The company also confirmed the platform’s focus on AI and Machine Learning (ML) to provide a better experience to Pixel users. Further, Google’s SoC will improve photo & video processing and help power up voice-to-speech and translation software. We can expect other Machine Learning (ML) capabilities on the upcoming Pixel smartphones as well.

Rick Osterloh says, “You’ll see this in everything from the completely revamped camera system to speech recognition and much more. So whether you’re trying to capture that family photo when your kids won’t stand still or communicate with a relative in another language, Pixel will be there — and it will be more helpful than ever.”

Unfortunately, the company isn’t providing any technical details and what this new SoC brings to the table precisely. According to few reports, the upcoming SoC is expected to be an octa-core, five nanometers, ARM-powered chip. It’s worth mentioning that ARM processors consume less energy and are used for various consumer devices like smartphones, tablets, and laptops.

In line with the previous leaks, the Pixel 6 series sports a distinctive look this year. The Pixel 6 features a matte finished metal frame with a glass back, whereas the Pixel 6 Pro has a glossy metal frame with a glass back. Similar to Nexus 6P, the Pixel 6 series phones carry a camera bar on the back.

Rick says, “We also upgraded the rear camera system. The improved sensors and lenses are now too big to fit into the traditional square — so the new design gives the whole camera system a new home with the camera bar.”

The Pixel 6 series comes in three colours, with a two-tone appearance on some variants.

Google Pixel 6 is rumoured to feature a 6.4-inch 90Hz flat display, 8GB RAM, 128/256GB of onboard storage, 50MP+12MP rear camera, 8MP front camera, Android 12, Stereo speakers, In-display fingerprint scanner, 5G support, and 4,614mAh battery with fast charging.

The Pixel 6 Pro is likely to pack a 6.67-inch 120Hz curved AMOLED screen, 12GB RAM, 128/256/512GB of onboard storage, 50MP+12MP+48MP rear camera, 8MP front camera, Android 12, Stereo speakers, In-display fingerprint scanner, 5G support, and 5000mAh battery with fast charging.

That’s pretty much all we know about these phones so far. Google plans to officially launch the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro this fall.
