With the advancement in technology, several aspects that were considered to be sci-fi are now becoming a reality. One such aspect is bone conduction technology audio products. It was under trials for quite some time to provide a comprehensive mixed-reality experience that increases both safety and efficiency in extreme working environments.

A London-based startup Mobilus Labs founded in 2017 carries the credits of being the first one to deliver the world’s first two-way bone conduction voice technology headband, which is a new age walkie talkie. This startup has received funds from Ascension Ventures, Entrepreneur Fist and Innovate UK and its customers include Bouygues, Bam Nuttall, Balfour Beatty and Trimble.

Called mobiWAN, it can be integrated into the standard safety helmets and is able to transmit voice communication directly into the inner ear via micro-vibrations on the head. And, it will bypass the necessity to have headphones within the ear.

Gets along with Trimble

In a recent development, Mobilus Labs announced that it has partnered with Trimble, a global leader in positioning and navigation technologies for the release of Trimble’s XR10 with Hololens 2. The mobiWAN_TR Bone Conduction headset is the only fit to have a truly immersive experience when used with the XR10 with Hololens 2 in industrial environments.

The Trimble XR10 with Hololens 2 enables construction workers to overlay Constructible Building Information Models (BIM) and other digital project data onto the physical context of the jobsite. Taking to approach to the next level, Trimble incorporates the Mobilus’ mobiWAN bone conduction audio headset for a fully immersive experience in the field. With mobiWAN audio output and the HoloLens’ advanced array of microphones, the system is capable of two-way communications and video remote assistance in high-ambient noise environments.

Notable use cases

The mobiWAN_TR features lightweight and comfortable medical grade silicon vibration pads that provide comfortable wearability for the full day. It is compatible with industry standard hardhat and certified to be used in safety controlled environments. Given that the headband is hands-free, front-line workers in extreme environments such as oil, construction, and gas, mining and manufacturing industries and concentrate on safe and efficiency delivery of their work. The mobWAN voice wearable is backed by a cloud based crossband (VoiP/RF) software platform to provide end-to-end voice communication solution.
