The world of technology is possibly the most exciting place to be a part of. Every day, people working in this industry are changing the way we live, the way the world works, and everything else in between. Which is probably why the tech realm is such a sought after place to work. Anyone who wants to make a difference, be innovative or channel creativity can find a home in the technology sphere, but it can be fairly competitive.

Thankfully, we’re here to help! We want to try and ensure you land an interview for your dream job. So, we’ve come up with a few tips on actions you can take when looking and applying for jobs in some of the worlds best tech companies.

Research

When looking for a job in a new industry, knowledge will become your best friend. If you are passionate about working in tech, then take the time to research and educate yourself on the goings on in the industry. Be aware of trends, significant figures, funding prospects, and everything else going on in the space.

Identify Sectors

So you have a dream of working in tech, yes? That is a noble, but extremely broad dream. Within the world of technology, there are countless micro-industries, from FinTech, to transformative tech and beyond. Be sure to identify the kind of tech sector you want to get into, and build your search around that specifically.

Recruiters

Recruiters can connect you with job opportunities. However, they have a lot to offer outside of that!  They want to help you get a job, and they’ll start by looking at your resume and providing interview hints. Remember, recruiters work closely with tech companies and hiring managers, so they understand what companies are looking for.

Job Boards

The job hunt can be time consuming, and stressful – so help yourself as much as you can, in as many ways as you can. A great way to aid your search is to peruse job boards, and sign up for emails. Think about it… you’ll end up getting suitable tech roles straight to your inbox as they go live. So handy! Our own job board (see here) is a great tool for anyone on the lookout for exciting opportunities in tech.

Startups

We know the large, established tech companies have a lot of appeal. The likes of Google and Facebook have become notorious for being excellent places to work, with good salaries, and a whole host of other benefits. However, startups are a great foot in the door to the world of tech. Consider joining a smaller organisation, where you will learn more, and ultimately gain more hands on experience.

Tailor Everything

To be fair, this is something we all kind of know, but often forget. BE SPECIFIC. Sending out the same generic cover letter and CV to dozens of companies is counter productive, and can be a sign that little effort was made on your end during the application process. Before applying for a job, spend some time researching the company’s product, mission, and history. Use this information to inform your cover letter and CV.

Practice for the phone call

Pretty much all tech companies will begin the hiring process with a phone interview, before calling you in for an onsite interview. This is usually a “get to know you” kind of exercise, but it does require preparation. Have your elevator pitch ready, know all you need to know about the role, and the company. Don’t get caught off guard, impress as much as you can, and you’ll surely sail into the face-to-face interview.

Take note of the above, and you’ll be sure to nail the interview, and hopefully land the tech job of your dreams. Oh, and be sure to keep and eye on Silicon Canals’ Jobs, for loads of exciting opportunities.
