Sonos, a California-based speaker company, announced that it has acquired Mayht, a Dutch startup known for developing highly compact, powerful speaker driver technology, for $100M (approx €92M) in an all-cash deal. Based out of Delft, Mayht specialises in an audio technology called Heartmotion.

The announcement comes five months after Mayht secured nearly $10M (approx €9.2M) in a Series A funding round from Exeger, venture capital firm Forward. One and music producer and DJ Martin Garrix.

Mayht: What you need to know

Founded by Timothy and Mattias Scheek in 2016, Mayht claims to have reinvented the core of speaker drivers, allowing consumer electronic companies and speaker manufacturers to make speakers ten times more compact than other models without sacrificing sound quality, range or output.

With Mayht, the founder brothers are targeting an addressable $375B consumer electronics and automotive speaker market through technology licensing.

The company is on a mission to provide the world with high-quality full-range sound, in the most desirable compact form factor ever.

This means consumers will be able to experience home cinema theatre bass from a single soundbar without the need for a separate subwoofer, or portable Bluetooth speakers.

“We are very excited and proud to become a part of Sonos,” said Mattias Scheek, CEO of Mayht. “Our dream has always been to set a new standard in the audio industry. The integration of our technology into Sonos products will further revolutionise high-quality sound.”

Sonos: What you need to know

Based out of California, Sonos is a sound experience company and developer of wireless multi-room music systems for the home.

By partnering with audio services like Audible.com, Last.FM, Napster, Pandora, RadioTime, Rhapsody, SIRIUS Internet Radio, and more, Sonos gives music lovers access to millions of songs, thousands of radio stations, audiobooks, and more.

“Mayht’s breakthrough in transducer technology will enable Sonos to take another leap forward in our product portfolio,” said Patrick Spence, CEO.

He adds, “This strategic acquisition gives us more incredible people, technology, and intellectual property that will further distinguish the Sonos experience, enhance our competitive advantage, and accelerate our future roadmap.”
