Climate change is an issue faced by countries all over the world. To combat this issue, the respective governments are coming up with possible solutions. Besides the efforts taken by the government, several businesses have started launching solutions that will keep the environment greener by cutting down the CO2 emissions.

Sustainable startups in the Netherlands have been doing well in various sectors. And, these startups are receiving investments never seen before to accelerate their product development and expansion. These startups have joined the ambitious government to come up with innovative solutions that will bring about an energy transition.

Funding: €14.3 million

Ioniqa is a clean-tech spinoff from the Eindhoven University of Technology founded in 2009. The company specialises in Magnetic Separation Processes and Magnetic Smart Materials. The company has developed a disruptive PET recycling technology, which uses a proprietary smart material catalyst. This technology helps it recycle PET waste into raw materials.

Solarus Sunpower

Director: Jacko D’Agnolo
Funding: €7 million

Established in 2006, Solarus Sunpower aims to accelerate the energy transition together with its business partners from across the world. The company wants to make a huge impact on both the environment and society. It achieves the same by developing, producing and selling hybrid solar PowerCollectors and integrated solutions. The PowerCollector combines thermal energy and photovoltaic generation of electricity to create cost-effective sustainable solutions.


Founders: Johannes Peschel, Roland Schmehl
Funding: €3.9 million

Kitepower, which is in operation since 2015 is one of the leading startups in airborne wind energy. This company develops cost-effective and innovative alternatives to existing wind turbines. It does it by employing kites to generate electricity. At Kitepower, they use a patented technology, which is a game-changer in this sector and it uses 90% lesser material despite being twice efficient than the existing technology.


Founders: Ferdinand Grapperhaus, Willem Kesteloo
Funding: €3.4 million

Physee is involved in the making of electricity generating smart windows to harness solar power since 2014. Its portfolio includes products such as SmartWindow, PowerWindow and a tablet app. The SmartWindow is fitted with sensors to measure the climatic conditions and estimate preferred building settings. On the other hand, PowerWindow is a transparent double-paned window, which can convert light into electricity. The EESY app communicates information from PowerWindow such as money saved, generated electricity and battery performance.

Ampyx Power

Founders: Richard Ruiterkamp
Funding: €2.1 million

Founded in 2008, Ampyx Power aims to accelerate the energy transition by unlocking additional sustainable energy sources. It’s Airborne Wind Energy System (AWES) with a tethered aircraft accesses more powerful and higher winds. With smaller foundations and lesser materials, it increases the availability of sites for off-shore repowering, cost-effective harvesting of wind energy, etc.

EcoChain Technologies

Founders: Boudewijn Mos
Funding: €2 million

EcoChain Technologies established in 2011 provides insights into the resource flows and efficiency of energy on the company, product, process and material level. It provides customers with sustainability performance and valuable knowledge on all levels. The company creates sustainability insights from data available in the production environments. It also takes data from ERP systems. After gathering data, the company calculates, analyses and visualises the energy and material flow.


Founders: Fred Henny, Lennart Budelmann, Pratap Thapa
Funding: €1.8 million

In 2013, aQysta is a high-tech startup founded at Delft University of Technology. It aims to provide sustainable hydro-powered pumping solutions that will have a positive impact on society, economy and environment. As it is located in Yes! Delft, one of the biggest high-tech incubators in Europe, it grants access to network, research and expertise facilities. Also, the company conducts technology to research, sourcing and global sales and product design and development.

Funding: €1.5 million

Waste4Me is an innovative Dutch company in the renewable energy sector. It was established in 2013 with the intention to design and provide technology solutions for decentralised locations where the waste management is a major issue. It develops waste to energy technologies and develops customer-specific solutions. The company’s WER is a unique waste-to-energy converter, which is certified and ready to be used by companies and government institutions.

Funding: €1 million

Established in 2012, Energyworx provides users with precise, relevant and unique data. Their platform enables behavioural science and aggregates data in various profiles with valuable context enriched data points. The company also lets users display actionable insights, cycles, trends and exceptions about the target audience and match services with the requirement of users.


Owner: Frans Bastiaanssen
Funding: €50k

Founded in 2012, eLEAF works with the mission to become a global reference in the daily supply of reliable data on vegetation and water of any land surface in order to support the increase of food production, sustainable use of water and protection of environmental systems. It has developed PiMapping technology, which has been launched after 15 years of research.
