Eindhoven-based NXP Semiconductors, a global provider of automotive processing and networking solutions, has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Aviva Links, a California-based company specialising in Automotive SerDes Alliance (ASA)-compliant in-vehicle connectivity solutions.
The all-cash deal is valued at $242.5M (approximately €233.13M). The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2025.
Infrastructure for automotive AI & ADAS systems
The growing use of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) in software-defined vehicles (SDVs) demands highly-asymmetric camera and display networks with standardised, high-bandwidth solutions.
Aviva Links addresses this need with its ASA-compliant portfolio, offering SerDes point-to-point (ASA-ML) and Ethernet-based (ASA-MLE) connectivity at data rates up to 16 Gbps.
The company has achieved design wins with two major automotive OEMs and is currently sampling its technology to additional OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers.
The Automotive SerDes Alliance (ASA), created in 2019 with NXP as a founding member, helps automakers adopt open and compatible networking solutions for modern software-based vehicles.
ASA provides a standard with data speeds from 2 Gbps to 16 Gbps and built-in security. It supports direct SerDes communication and smooth transition to Ethernet-based sensor connections.
Aim of the acquisition
NXP projects the market for ADAS and IVI asymmetrical links to grow from $1B in 2024 to $2B by 2034. The acquisition of Aviva Links is expected to support this growth by transitioning the market from proprietary solutions to open standard ASA SerDes connections.
Meindert van den Beld, Senior Vice President and General Manager of In-vehicle Networking, NXP Semiconductors, says, “NXP is one of ASA’s founding partners, and we are thrilled to add asymmetrical multi-gigabit ASA links to our portfolio.”
“This complements and expands our leadership position in automotive networking solutions ranging from CAN and LIN to Ethernet switches and physical layer devices.”
“This portfolio enables us to offer OEMs complete networking solutions directly, making the software-defined vehicle a reality. Furthermore, we are excited to have Aviva Links’ highly knowledgeable team join NXP’s automotive innovation ranks.”
The ASA now includes over 150 members from across the automotive industry, including manufacturers such as BMW, Ford, Stellantis, and General Motors, as well as suppliers, semiconductor vendors, and test tool providers.
BMW Group, a founding member, is the first automaker to announce series production using ASA-ML technology this decade.
