Last update:

UK-based spacetech startup, Open Cosmos, announced on Wednesday that it has unveiled its flagship ‘OpenConstellation’ project at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) 2022 in Paris.

Built and managed by Oxfordshire-based Open Cosmos, the flagship project will allow anyone (country, institution, or company) to access satellite data to address challenges, including climate crisis, energy, natural resources, and more.

Rafel Jorda Siquier, founder and CEO of Open Cosmos, says, “The main challenges the world faces today are global, and satellites naturally provide that global perspective we need to make the right decisions. The key objective of OpenConstellation is to make necessary data and information from space more accessible. A mutualised infrastructure will provide the right balance between the budget organisations or government can afford and the associated performance they need.”

According to Open Cosmos, Project OpenConstellation combines the latest satellite telecommunication capabilities with the most advanced earth observation sensors and data processing capabilities.

Open Cosmos says a mutualised infrastructure provides the right balance between the budget organisations or governments can afford and the associated performance they need.

“It provides a great advantage to its members by multiplying their ability to cover their areas of interest and to revisit in case of emergency,” says the company in the press release.

The company will manage and run the entire constellation, right from manufacturing to managing the launch of the satellites, as well as being responsible for housekeeping and processing the payload data.

The data for partner agencies will be available through Open Cosmos’ data sharing platform, DataCosmos, launched earlier this year.

The cloud platform will offer data from complementary sources such as vectors, drones, and sensors resulting from algorithms and a roster of applications that can make satellite imagery useful and valuable.

The first batch of OpenConstellation satellites will launch in November later this year with satellites from UK, Spain, and Portugal space organisations.

Moreover, Open Cosmos will announce future batches of the constellation from existing and new members to provide a total of 25 UK-built and designed satellites to make it easier for organisations to access satellite data to address various challenges.

At the moment, all satellites in the OpenConstellation are built by Open Cosmos and includes:

  • Multispectral (RGB, NIR) satellites with resolutions of 2.5m and swaths of 13km
  • A 32 bands hyperspectral satellite with a resolution of 4.95m and 20km swath.

Open Cosmos: What you need to know

Open Cosmos aims to solve the world’s biggest challenges through satellite missions and the data gathered from space. Launching a satellite to access vital data in the past has been expensive. The UK company is making it accessible.

The company takes care of the end-to-end process, including designing, building, launching, and operating small satellites, and providing data and services through its platform.

Since its inception in 2015, the company has developed multiple advanced satellites for telecommunications, earth observation, navigation, and science.
