Reykjavík, Iceland-based Overtune, a mobile platform where users can arrange sounds, record a voice video and share it on their social media platforms, announced on Friday (July 1, 2022) that it has raised $2M (approximately €1.91M) in a Seed round of funding.
The investment came from Gabriel Jagger’s media company Whynow. Overtune’s shareholders also include Charles Huang, founder of gaming franchise Guitar Hero, and Nick Gatfield, former CEO and chairman of Sony Music UK.
Sigurdur Arnason, co-founder and CEO of Overtune, says, “I am thrilled to have Gabriel and the Whynow team on board at Overtune. In a few short weeks, they have impressed me with their agility and startup mindset.”
The mission behind Overtune
Founded in 2020 by Sigurdur Arnason, Jason Dadi Gudjonsson, and Pétur Eggerz Pétursson, Overtune is a mobile platform where users can arrange sounds, record a voice video, and share it on their social media platforms. To produce material, users don’t need any training or expertise in music.
The mobile platform offers content that is accessible to people who don’t know how to create or produce music, while retaining the quality of content associated with some of the most successful music producers in the world. Music is arranged using a looping technique, and speech and video are then added on top.
Co-founder Petur Eggerz Petursson says, “Traditional music apps and composition program have been accessible only to individuals with extensive technical and musical expertise, locking many out of the content creation economy.”
Major social media sites like Instagram and TikTok do not yet provide the opportunity to add music to users’ social media material. Overtune allows users to create their own musical material, as opposed to depending on pre-existing music, and therefore outsourcing the creative process.
Co-founder Jason Dadi Gudjonsson adds, “Virality on Social media is powerful, yet unpredictable. With the increase of TikTok and Instagram Reels content, the modern media format has changed. Overtune is made to fit the needs of the creative social media users who want to create content on the fly – giving users a tool that allows them to project their own identity through sound rather than relying on pre-existing songs when making content.”
Overtune’s features
Content is created by arranging music in a loop-based system and adding voice and video on top. According to Techround, its main features include:
Beat Packs: Each pack is preloaded with a themed collection of sounds that are all the same tempo and key so that each loop may be combined to the user’s demands. The sounds were created by producers, artists, influencers, and companies. Producer-created rhythm packs include a wide spectrum of musical genres and include loops like bells, hats, percussion, voices, strings, FX, and provide users with specialised musical tastes and access to musical creativity.
Editing Tools: The sequencer in Overtune enables looping sounds to create a rhythm. The user may then trim, enable or disable loops, and modify the beat’s loudness and duration. The sequencer is easy to use by everyone and has minimum musical and technical requirements.
Video and Voice Recording: Users can add their own voice and video recordings as the last stage of the Overtune creative process. The procedure for including voice recordings is simple. By recording oneself more than once, users of Overtune’s new multi-voice capability may produce layered vocal harmonies and vocal layers. Then, Overtune’s technology automatically scans the beat pack’s pitch to ensure that the user’s voice stays in tune with their Overtune production. Users then have the option to put video on top.
Social Media Sharing: Once complete, users may export their musically enhanced social media moments from the app and post them to social media sites. Additionally, Overtune has a social feed of its own that users may follow and like in order to follow and enjoy material from other platform contributors.
