Amsterdam-based Invest-NL, a Dutch impact investor focused on driving innovation in the Netherlands, has announced the appointment of Peter Molengraaf as the new Chairman of its Supervisory Board, effective May 1, 2025.

He takes over from Jan Nooitgedagt, who had served in the role since the organisation’s inception in 2020.

Molengraaf has been a member of the Supervisory Board since 2020 and brings extensive experience from the energy sector. He previously served as CEO of Alliander and held several national and international roles at Nuon and Shell.

In addition to his role at Invest-NL, he currently chairs the Top Sector Energy, where he works on advancing the energy transition in the Netherlands.

Molengraaf says, “It is an honour to take on the role of Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Invest-NL. Invest-NL plays a crucial role in accelerating the energy transition and stimulating sustainable innovations. I look forward to contributing to a future-proof Netherlands together with the organisation and the other supervisory directors.”

Making the Netherlands more sustainable and innovative

Invest-NL was established to support the development of a more sustainable and innovative Netherlands. This involves long-term work, funding, and backing for entrepreneurs with forward-looking plans.

The organisation finances projects that contribute to large-scale changes in sectors such as climate, energy, and society.

According to Invest-NL, there is a shortage of risk capital in the Netherlands compared to countries like Germany, the UK, and the US. This is especially true for projects that require significant investment, carry high risk, and have long timelines. Invest-NL was created to fill this gap by providing funding and taking on risks that others avoid.

Its mission is to support entrepreneurs with strong plans for the future of the country. The organisation focuses on achieving impact and uses financial returns as a tool to reach that goal.

Invest-NL supports opportunities others may not pursue, can accept longer wait times for returns, and has access to European funding. By working with others rather than competing, Invest-NL helps enable projects that may otherwise not move forward, sharing risk to make more possible.

The organisation receives €1.7B in share capital from the Dutch government, with the Ministry of Finance as its shareholder. However, it makes its investment decisions independently, without influence from politicians or civil servants, based on its own mandate.

The €1.7B is used for investments where a business case is profitable, even if there are risks, to recover the investment.

In a recent development, Invest-NL acquired a priority stake in Fox Crypto at the request of the Dutch Ministries of Defence, Economic Affairs, and the Interior.
