Last update:

Aarhus, Denmark-based Rig.dev, an open-source application platform for Kubernetes, announced that it has secured €2M in a pre-seed round of funding. The startup says this is one of the largest-ever Danish pre-seed rounds.

The investment came from a mix of notable VC funds such as byFounders, Dreamcraft, and NP-Hard Ventures, as well as smaller venture funds and individual business angels.

What does the new startup offer?

Rig.dev aims to build a global company that rethinks software development for the cloud. The startup offers an open-source platform designed to simplify the development of scalable backend and cloud infrastructure.

By reducing complexity in these areas, Rig.dev enables developers to allocate more time to coding the core, business-critical components of their software applications.

Anders Johnsen, co-founder of Rig.dev, says, “Today, when building a new backend, developers lack an easy-to-use solution that offers the flexibility and scalability that fast-growing companies need. Existing solutions are simply too restrictive and not made for fast-growing and complicated projects.

“Our platform is, and at the same time we give the power back to the developers, who, unlike today, can choose exactly which databases and technologies they want to use when developing,” he adds.

With over 5.6 million developers already using Kubernetes in their cloud infrastructure, Rig.dev aims to establish a new standard for scalable software infrastructure capable of serving millions of users efficiently.

This approach could simplify infrastructure management and make it more accessible for a wide range of projects, says the Danish startup.

Kubernetes is an open-source container-orchestration system for automating computer application deployment, scaling, and management. Kubernetes was originally designed by Google and is now maintained by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation.

Johnsen adds, “We enable developers to build and manage backend applications easier, and by making it compatible with Kubernetes, we make it easier to deploy and scale. This is usually incredibly complex and requires strong knowledge of DevOps and infrastructure, which is a limited resource, and a problem on a global scale.”

“With our platform, developers used to working with Kubernetes will maintain control and save a lot of time, while those who are not easily can get started without having to deal with the complexity,” he says.

Capital utilisation

The capital infusion will support team expansion, product development, and the commencement of commercialisation efforts, positioning Rig.dev for growth and market success.

Johnsen says, “We are extremely proud that in a difficult market, we have managed to raise a round that from the start gives us the opportunity to build the product we want with the team we want.”
