There might hardly be anyone who doesn’t like watching a good story, especially when it’s portrayed in a scintillating manner. Add to it the intricacies of building a business empire and you will almost certainly have a hit on your hands. This is exactly what happened with The Social Network, which was penned by Aaron Sorkin and depicts the humble beginnings of Facebook, the biggest online social media platform. Now, Spotify is next on the list as Netflix has adopted its story as an original series.
“It is a story about how hard convictions, unrelenting will, access and big dreams can help small players challenge the status quo by evolving the way we can all listen to music,” Netflix said in a press release.
Spotify becomes a Netflix original series
Netflix has confirmed that it is making a web series on the Swedish online music streaming company Spotify. Not much is currently known about the series but we do know that it is an untitled scripted show that is inspired by the book ‘Spotify Untold’ that is authored by business reporters at Swedish Dagens Industri, Sven Carlsson and Jonas Leijonhufvud. The show will be produced by Yellow Bird UK, a Banijay Group company and the production company behind the upcoming Netflix series Young Wallander.
Given that both the production houses have a penchant for producing dramatic shows, we can expect the upcoming show on Spotify to be more of a dramatic account rather than a documentary. Per-Olav Sørensen, who previously worked with Netflix on Quicksand, will be directing the new production while Berna Levin will serve as executive producer. The show will revolve around Spotify and its co-founders Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon.
“The founding tale of Spotify is a great example of how a local story can have a global impact. We are really excited about bringing this success story to life and we look forward to continuing our great collaboration with director Per-Olav Sørensen and the team at Yellow Bird UK,” saysTesha Crawford, Director of International Originals Northern Europe at Netflix.
Spotify’s tussle with Apple
Going by Netflix’s release on the announcement of the new untitled series, it seems like Spotify’s ongoing tussle with Apple might also be included. There’s also a chance that the former Apple CEO Steve Jobs might make an appearance as a rival. It won’t come as a surprise if the series further explores the skirmish between the two companies. Spotify has a dedicated website claiming that Apple plays unfair and filed a complaint in the European Commision against the company earlier this year.
As for the upcoming series about Spotify, there’s no definitive timeline on when it will be made available on Netflix.
