Berlin-based Springer Nature, a company that advances discovery by publishing trusted research, has signed an agreement to integrate Amsterdam-based Slimmer AI’s Science division (SAI) into its operations.
This collaboration follows years of partnership between Springer Nature and Slimmer AI, dating back to 2015.
Springer Nature is dedicated to advancing research discovery. The company ensures the quality and significance of published research, making it accessible, reusable, and shareable.
The company supports researchers, institutions, and societies by providing innovative technology solutions and publishing support.
Aim of the acquisition
Through this collaboration, Springer Nature and Slimmer AI have developed advanced software utilising emerging technologies.
These AI tools are designed to enhance the publishing process by identifying suitable editors for manuscripts, improving reviewer acceptance rates by suggesting the best peer reviewers, and ensuring the integrity of scientific publications by automating the detection of potential issues like plagiarism.
These innovations aim to streamline and enhance the quality of scientific publishing.
Matthias Wissel, Chief Information Officer at Springer Nature, says, “With a third of our colleagues already working in technology roles, technology is central to our ability to serve our communities and has played a vital role in the success of Springer Nature.”
“It has helped us make our content more accessible, more open and visible, easier to find, use and cite and deliver on our mission to publish high-quality trusted research quickly to help society find solutions to the world’s biggest challenges.”
“I am thrilled to have Slimmer AI’s Science division join Springer Nature and expand our existing AI expertise. After years of successful collaboration, I am excited to see how we can scale and accelerate the further improvements we believe AI can help us deliver throughout the research process for our authors and customers,” says Wissel.
Heather Devereaux, MD of Slimmer AI Science, adds, “It has been an honour to co-build transformative AI products together with Springer Nature over the past few years, and we’ve shared many successes and learnings.”
“The synergies between our cultures and values, such as the responsible and ethical use of technology, a commitment to continuous improvement, and putting user needs at the heart of product development, make this integration a natural fit and the perfect continuation of our journey,” adds Devereaux.
Springer Nature’s acquisition of Slimmer AI’s Science division is part of a series of strategic moves, including procuring protocols.io for method sharing and launching Curie, their AI-powered scientific writing assistant.
