This article discusses research on short-term stress markers, not individual medical advice. A park break is not a substitute for professional care when stress or physical symptoms are persistent or severe.
Twenty minutes in a park can feel too ordinary to count as an intervention. There is no workout plan, no specialised breathing pattern and no requirement to reach a remote forest. A person can walk slowly, sit on a bench or do some of both.
A small field study found that this kind of ordinary contact with nature was followed by a measurable change in saliva. Cortisol fell beyond the decline that would normally be expected as the day progressed, and the most efficient window appeared between 20 and 30 minutes.
The sitting detail matters.
It suggests that the result was not simply a disguised exercise effect. But the claim still needs careful wording. The researchers measured two biological markers; they did not establish that every participant “felt physically better”, and they did not prove that 20 minutes is a universal dose.
The study measured saliva, not a feeling
In the 2019 University of Michigan study, 36 adults living around Ann Arbor spent time in an outdoor place that gave them a sense of contact with nature. They chose the place, time and duration, provided the session lasted at least 10 minutes, and were asked to do this at least three times a week over eight weeks.
On four occasions, participants collected saliva immediately before and after their nature experience. The researchers analysed cortisol and alpha-amylase, two markers used in stress research.
Cortisol is often called a stress hormone, but it is not a simple gauge with “bad” at the top and “good” at the bottom. It has essential roles throughout the body and normally changes across the day. Levels tend to be higher around waking and fall towards night. Food, exercise, sleep, medication, collection timing and acute events can all complicate interpretation.
That is why the study did not treat any fall as evidence that nature caused it. The statistical model estimated the participants’ normal daytime decline, then calculated the additional change associated with the nature session. The estimated nature-related reduction was 21.3 per cent per hour beyond an 11.7 per cent hourly diurnal fall.
This is evidence of a short-term physiological shift. It is not the same as measuring pain, energy, illness or a participant’s overall physical condition. “Feeling physically better” is a plausible everyday description of how some people experience lower arousal, but it was not the study’s outcome.
Twenty to thirty minutes was the efficient window
The result is often simplified into a 20-minute rule. The paper’s analysis was more specific.
The researchers divided 110 recorded nature experiences into four duration groups. The 21-to-30-minute group showed the largest estimated cortisol reduction beyond the normal time-of-day change. Sessions longer than 30 minutes were still associated with a reduction, but the benefit accumulated more slowly per unit of time.
In other words, 20 to 30 minutes was the point of best return in this dataset. It was not a biological switch that stayed off for 19 minutes and turned on at 20.
The shortest sessions also deserve restraint. The study was designed to examine real-life behaviour, not to compare perfectly balanced time blocks in a laboratory. Only 28 experiences fell into the 7-to-14-minute group and 27 into the 15-to-20-minute group. The authors said their sample was not large enough to describe the response confidently at the shortest and longest durations.
So the useful conclusion is modest: if someone can spare roughly a third of an hour, this study suggests that it is a reasonable window for a nature break. It does not show that 10 minutes is useless, that 45 minutes is wasteful or that everybody responds on the same timetable.
Sitting did not cancel the cortisol response
Participants could sit, walk or combine the two. They were asked to avoid aerobic exercise, along with phone calls, social media, reading and conversation. That made the sessions quieter than many ordinary park visits, while still allowing people to choose their own green setting.
For cortisol, activity type did not change the estimated response. The slope was almost identical for those who walked and those who sat or mixed sitting with walking. The second marker, alpha-amylase, was more sensitive to activity, so the researchers treated cortisol as the more robust field measure.
This does not mean walking and sitting are physiologically identical. Walking has its own effects, and the study was not designed to compare exercise with rest. It means that within these non-aerobic nature experiences, the cortisol finding did not depend on staying in motion.
That makes the result more accessible. A park break need not become another performance target. Someone who is tired, has limited mobility or simply does not want a workout can still have the kind of nature experience examined here.
It also changes the likely explanation. If the cortisol response appeared at a similar rate while sitting and walking, movement alone cannot account for the pattern. The setting, the pause from ordinary demands, reduced digital input or some combination of those conditions may have contributed. This study cannot separate them.
The wider evidence supports the direction, not an exact dose
Silicon Canals recently examined the broader finding that short periods in green space can shift stress markers. Looking beyond the Ann Arbor experiment, the general direction appears in other research, but the methods and results are not uniform.
A systematic review of 12 studies found that all seven studies measuring physiological stress reported an inverse relationship with nature exposure. Five of six studies measuring perceived stress also reported lower self-ratings. The included research used many different outcomes, from cortisol and blood pressure to heart-rate variability and brain imaging, so it supports a broad association rather than a precise 20-minute prescription.
A separate scoping review of college-aged adults found beneficial changes after both sitting and walking in nature, often within 10 to 30 minutes. It also found mixed results on some measures. Not every study showed improvement in perceived stress, happiness or attention.
That inconsistency is important. A saliva result and a felt result can move together, but they do not have to. A person may notice calm before a biomarker changes, show a physiological shift without consciously feeling different, or have an uncomfortable park visit because of heat, noise, allergies, safety concerns or pain.
A park break is useful because it is undemanding
The original study’s strongest feature is also one of its limitations. Participants chose their own settings and schedules, which made the experiment resemble real life. It also meant there was no randomly assigned urban indoor or street condition for comparison. The group was small, 92 per cent female and 86 per cent white, and everyone had volunteered because they wanted to spend more time outdoors.
The authors were clear that broader samples, more seasons and more varied settings were needed. Their result is a starting point, not a universal law.
Still, the practical idea survives the caveats. A useful break does not always need to be intense, expensive or productive. The study’s participants did not have to count steps. Sitting was compatible with the cortisol result, and the greatest estimated return appeared within a duration that can fit into an ordinary day.
Twenty minutes in a park cannot tell us how any one person’s body will respond. It can tell us that sitting quietly in a green place is not necessarily doing nothing.
