Startups play an important role in the economy of our country. They contribute to technological progress, create new jobs and help the economy grow.

One innovating initiative to promote cooperation between government and startups is the ‘Startup in Residence’ programme. Startup in Residence started as an initiative in San Francisco to get startups and governments working together in an innovative and equal way.

After the successful first edition of Startup in Residence, the Ministry of Justice and Security in the Netherlands is currently organising the second edition, startups can now register to help us solve 11 very varied, societal challenges.

What exactly is the ‘Startup in Residence’ programme?

Startup in Residence is an innovative co-working programme which challenges startups to find solutions to societal issues. Three startups per challenge will be given the opportunity to present their idea to a jury.

The ministry is, particularly, seeking innovative solutions for societal challenges including criminal investigation, crime prevention, online child abuse, provision of information, young people and more.

Why should you participate as a startup?

The winners (one per challenge) of this programme will be provided with a development budget and a customised training and guidance programme. Each challenge has a dedicated project owner from within the ministry. After five months of intensive collaboration between startup and the Ministry of Justice and Security, the programme will conclude with a festive Demo Day in June 2019.

On Demo Day startups will present a working MVP/prototype to the challenge owners, potential buyers, and the Justice and Security network. By participating in the program, startups get to know 50+ members of the S&J-government network.

Registration, venue and more

There are several challenges startups and young enterprises can register for. The registrations are open until November 8th, 2018. If you have any questions about the programme, please send an e-mail to [email protected]

Do you have what it takes to help us solve our challenges? Then, register now!

Furthermore, the Ministry of Justice and Security is hosting a meetup at the “Humanity Hub” in The Hague on October 25th. On this occasion, the challenges will be explained in more detail. You can register via the aforementioned link, come and ask your questions in person.
