As the agriculture industry is getting advanced with the use of technological products such as robotics and automation, a new concept called urban farming has kicked in. Many farmers and agriculturists are opting for automation and robotics resulting in yield, which is more sustainable, efficient and profitable.
When it comes to urban farming, Infarm based in Berlin is a leading urban farming company. The company was founded in 2013 by Osnat Michaeli, Erez Galonska and Guy Galonska. It has over 50 farms in Berlin located in restaurant kitchens, distribution warehouses and supermarket aisles.
Raises whopping €88 million funding!
In a recent development, Infarm has announced that it has raised a whopping sum of €88 million Series B funding. This latest funding round was led by Atomico along with its existing investors such as Astanor Ventures, TriplePoint Capital, Balderton Capital and Cherry Ventures.
The investment will be used to expand the company’s growth in Europe, the US and beyond and grow the operational, R&D and commercial teams as well.
“Infarm was founded with an ambitious vision to feed the cities of tomorrow by bringing farms closer to the consumer, and with this round of funding we aim to grow our presence further,” Erez Galonska, co-founder and CEO of Infarm. “Sowing the seeds for a delicious and sustainable food system in urban centres across North America, Asia, and Europe.”
Plans to enter UK and US soon!
This German urban farming startup is all set to expand its footprint to the UK this September. It will enter the UK market with some largest online and brick-and-mortar supermarkets. The company is also in discussion with retailers in Japan and the US indicating that there is a demand for local and fresh produce on a global scale.
It’s infinitely scalable
As compared to the other vertical farming startups, Infarm is designed to be flexible so that it can be built anywhere. It can be installed as a single farming unit at a restaurant or arranged as a few units together at a school or supermarket. Infarm gains an upper hand as it can be designed in such a way that thousands of farming units are positioned together at a warehouse.
With this farming unit, customers can get their hands on fresh herbs in just two to three weeks of the installation. Infarm supports growing up to 680,000 plants on a yearly basis within a space of 25 square metres, which makes it much more efficient than soil-based agriculture.
Cloud-based farming platform
This German startup’s farming units can be remotely controlled with the help of the company’s centralised and cloud-based farming platform. This platform can quickly learn, adjust and improve itself so that all plants have a better growth.
