Last update:

The app only Dutch bank, bunq which expanded its operations across all EU countries, last month has released a new metal card in the market. So what’s unique about this new shiny card? Dubbed as bunq Green Card, this one is all about greener good and will empower consumers to build a greener world without any effort.

How does it work?

As for every €100,- spent with the card, bunq will plant a tree. As per the company press release, the Dutch startup along with the partnership with Eden Reforestation Projects released a limited edition of the Mastercard credit card (Founders Cards on Green Thursday) for 1,000 customers and it was sold out within a day.

Ali Niknam, founder and CEO:

We’re truly amazed by all the positive responses we’ve received and we’re super excited to release bunq Green Card to the market officially! Everybody out there can now build a greener world, without any effort.

To stay in-the-know about their green impact, bunq Green Card users will receive monthly updates on how their lives contribute to a greener future.

As informed by the company, trees planted through Eden Reforestation Projects capture 308kg CO2 over their 25-year average life span. The green impact of a user who spends €1,000 a month with his bunq Green Card is such that it takes just 5 years to start offsetting his yearly carbon footprint and be fully carbon neutral.

After depositing funds, the metal card can be used for online as well as offline payments. Users can enjoy the benefits of a credit card, such as global acceptance, without the burden of debt. At the same time, they can enjoy the real exchange rate and free global ATM withdrawals. bunq Green Card will also offer Apple Pay support in the Netherlands, Germany, France, Belgium, Austria, Ireland, Spain and Italy as well as Google Pay support in Germany, France, Belgium, Ireland, Spain and Italy.

The Amsterdam-based fintech company is currently active in 30 European markets, is seen as part of the four biggest European challengers, together with N26, Revolut, and Monzo. Founded in 2012 by Ali Niknam (1981), the European challenger bank has raised €44.9 million so far and is among the most successful digital bank startups of Amsterdam.
