Last update:

Last year, global demand for tech roles saw full-stack, back-end and front-end developers in the top three spots for recruiters looking to fill jobs. That’s not a surprise as these are roles that are crucial to an evolving landscape of technology and business needs––these skills contribute to developing efficient, user-friendly applications.

In 2024, applications developers, DevOps professionals, AI and ML specialists, software architects, project managers and data scientists were also in high demand among tech recruiters.

But that was then, and this is now. So, what does 2025’s hiring landscape look like for European tech workers who are looking for a new role this year?

5 jobs to apply for now

Europe’s labour market is a mixed bag. Data shows it has remained robust despite slower economic growth, and that employment growth is mostly driven by job creation in trade, transport, accommodation, and food service activities.

Employment levels may be at record highs, but there are significant skills gaps within the tech sector in particular. As a result, companies are experiencing labour and skills shortages, and this places the bloc at a disadvantage, according to a recent study from Digital Europe.

The research looked at eight of the critical technology areas outlined in the EU’s Economic Security Strategy, including semiconductors, AI, manufacturing, quantum computing, energy tech, space tech, and advanced connectivity. The EU is falling behind its global rivals in seven of the eight technologies, only coming out on top in advanced connectivity.

The study also found that Europe is in the throes of a talent shortage across AI engineering, quantum computing, and additive manufacturing. The landscape for tech jobs in Europe this year is also set to be heavily influenced by advancements in AI, cybersecurity needs, and the ongoing transition to cloud-based solutions.

Jobs on the rise

If you are looking to advance your career this year within the tech sector, then it’s a wise idea to focus on developing skills related to some specific key roles. Think of it as insurance to help you remain competitive in what is an ever-evolving job market.

The Silicon Canals Job Board is a great place to start your search; here are the roles, and keywords, to look out for this year.

AI engineering jobs look set to be in growth mode as artificial intelligence grows in popularity and awareness. Increased integration of AI across various sectors, including finance and healthcare, is driving this demand. AI engineers develop and optimise AI models, and require proficiency in machine learning frameworks, programming, and data analysis.

Look also at MLOps, which is a set of engineering practices specific to machine learning projects that borrow from the established DevOps principles.

As more and more companies adopt machine learning technologies, the demand for MLOps expertise will only grow. Practitioners focus on deploying machine learning models into production environments and need strong expertise in ML lifecycle management, and software engineering.

The push for operational efficiency across sectors is driving the need for automation engineers too. Automation engineers design automated systems to improve efficiency in processes, and should be proficient in automation technologies and programming.

An ongoing shift to cloud computing is increasing the need for cloud architects, who can design cloud solutions and oversee cloud strategy, via expertise in cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, and GCP.

A need for cloud architects is also reflected in the rise of security jobs. This is driven by a number of factors, one of which is growing adoption of web-based applications and services.

As a result, cybersecurity specialists can expect to see opportunities in 2025 thanks to growing concerns over data breaches and cyberattacks, which necessitate a stronger cybersecurity workforce across Europe.

5 more roles to consider

DevSecOps engineering talent is in demand too, as the necessity for secure software development practices is prompting organisations to seek skilled workers who have an  understanding of software development, security compliance, and automation tools, and who can integrate security practices into DevOps processes.

The rise of data-driven decision-making across industries is also driving a need for data scientists who can deliver analysis on complex datasets to provide actionable insights for business growth.

Digital transformation consultants who can guide companies through digital transformation initiatives, and tech product managers who are proficient in overseeing the development of tech products from conception to launch, are also set to be in demand.

And green jobs are in growth due to a European focus on sustainability and environmental goals which is creating new roles centered around sustainable practices. Think renewable energy jobs and sustainability analysts.

Specifically, LinkedIn reports that health safety environment officer, solar specialist, and sustainability consultant roles are the three fastest growing green job titles with average yearly growth rates of 55.5%, 50.55%, and 44.67% respectively, over the last three years.

Whether you’re looking to break into a new sector or advance your current role, staying ahead of these trends should boost your chances of success. By exploring emerging roles and developing the right skills, your next big career move could be just around the corner.
