Whether youโve recently moved roles or the company you work for has hired someone new to replace your old boss, getting on with your manager is a fundamental component to getting on with the job. Just ask those whoโve managed to cling on to their jobs at Twitter, taken over by Tesla CEO Elon Musk last week.
But what do you do when you donโt gel with your new boss, personally or professionally, but you donโt want to quit? While thereโs not much you can do to tackle the personal side of things (apart from keeping your interactions with each other surface-level cordial), if your professional dealings take a contentious turn because you simply cannot work in synergy, you may have a bigger problem that will require a plan of action.
While Twitterโs former board of directors and employees at C-suite level could do little to avoid dismissal at the hands of Elon Musk, ordinarily there are lots of things you can do to help assimilate your new bossโ intentions with your own, without either of you resorting to drastic measures straight off the bat.
Great Expectations
Open dialogue is the easiest way to ensure you and your new boss are on the same page, so initiating a meeting where you take their expectations on board and figure out how you can align them with your own goals is a good place to start. Follow up with an email detailing your plan of action, including a workable timeframe, and ask your boss to sign off on this. That way thereโs no room for confusion, crossed wires or conflict.
Ask For More Autonomy
In a global survey of 1,500 business leaders and 17,000 employees across 22 countries and 26 industries by EY for its 2022 Work Reimagined Survey, 44% of employers cited giving their employees more empowerment and autonomy as a business driver that improved both the culture and productivity of their workforce. If you feel like your new boss is micro-managing your workload, request more autonomy within the framework youโve already outlined to bolster your proposition.
Request A Remote Role
Before the pandemic, 85% of European workers had never worked remotely from home. Now, more employees are demanding greater flexibility from their employers in the form of hybrid or remote working options. If you think your working relationship with your boss might improve if thereโs some physical distance between you, requesting your position to be fully remote might be the answer.
According to a recent global report by McKinsey, 40% of people who left their current job did so without a new one lined up, while those considering quitting their current role without a job offer on the table came in at 60%.
So, if you do find yourself looking for a new role ASAP and want to seek out a company that has core values that mirror your own, head to the Silicon Canals Job Board or check out these three great roles below.
