Last update:

Prague-based Zerops, a spin-off from hosting provider VSHosting, has secured $500K (approximately €466K) in a pre-seed round of funding from Presto Ventures and Gi21 Capital.

Ales Rechtorik, CEO & co-founder of Zerops, says, “Zerops is the very definition of a ‘by developers for developers’ product. The core of our vision, as well as our guiding principle, is making developers’ lives easier.”

“While staying humble, well aware of the behemoth of the cloud industry, we’re working hard to gain the trust of the early adopters from the developer community. And to make our vision come true, we’re expanding the Zerops team.”

The company maintains a strategic partnership with VSHosting’s global parent, Contabo Group (part of KKR portfolio since 2022). This partnership enables Zerops to deliver developer-first PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) solutions for application development, deployment, and management.

Zerops: “by developers for developers”

Founded in 2017 by Ales Rechtorik and Jan Saidl, Zerops is a developer-centric Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) offering a cloud platform for building, deploying, running, and managing applications of any scale or complexity.

The company claims to integrate the best development practices and provides guided paths, simplifying the development process. This enables solo developers and small to medium-sized teams to create “great” applications.

When developers use Zerops, they can focus solely on coding, free from managing complex infrastructure like networking, databases, storage, and server upkeep.

Zerops manages robust project infrastructures with Kubernetes-like capabilities, ensuring optimal performance and cost efficiency across production and non-production environments alike. They aim to eliminate the dreaded “but it works on my machine” situations.

The Zerops team leverages nearly two decades of managed services expertise from VSHosting. Supported by Contabo Group, Zerops benefits from a global infrastructure spanning Europe, the USA, Singapore, Japan, and India.

Developed over three years, Zerops offers a complete solution controlling hardware and application orchestration from scratch. It combines four key pillars:

  • Fine-grained resource configuration and auto-scaling: Ensures optimal resource allocation across environments, avoiding overprovisioning or performance issues common in other hosting solutions.
  • Custom underlying project infrastructure: Designed to handle large-scale production needs efficiently while maintaining affordability for non-production setups.
  • Developer-friendly pricing model: Encourages multiple environments per developer without additional fees for seats or feature tiers. Zerops claims its pricing is generally 2-3 times lower than competitors in the PaaS and cloud development sectors.
  • Transparent managed services: Zerops claims to ensure transparency in creating managed services like databases, avoiding the black-box approach and minimising vendor lock-in, a common issue among other PaaS platforms that Zerops aims to overcome.

Capital utilisation

Zerops will use the funds to prioritise integrating top frameworks and open-source software, expanding documentation and knowledge resources, enhancing onboarding procedures, and increasing market presence for global expansion.

Premysl Rubes, Founder and Managing Partner of Presto Ventures, says, “For a while, developers have been leaving Heroku, the market leader in this segment, in favour of more innovative and flexible competitors – and thanks to Ales and Jan, more are now quickly switching to Zerops.”

“Given the massive use of AI in programming, developers are now developing much faster and more efficiently. Naturally, they’re also looking for ways to easily acquire and set up the infrastructure for their projects to run on.”

“At Presto, we like spin-offs. There’s a few in our portfolio already and so far, Zerops is the one that brings us the most joy with its velocity and user interest,” adds Rubes.
