Amsterdam-based bunq’s eco-friendly Green Card initiative plants 40,000 trees to save CO2 emissions

bunq, an Amsterdam-based challenger bank is on a green mission and has contributed to the environment by attempting to reduce the CO2 emissions drastically. Founded in 2012 by Ali Niknam, bunq is all set to radically change the traditional banking industry. Of late, it has been quite successful accounting to twice the user deposits in 2018 with the same increasing continuously.

In an attempt to make the world a greener place without any special efforts, bunq came up with the Green Card. It is a metal card, which plants a tree for every €100 spent. As users spend, bunq will plant trees. It can be anything such as groceries, train tickets, holiday expenses, etc. The Green Card is itself better for the planet as it is made of metal, which lasts 50% longer than a regular plastic card.

Plants 40,000 trees!

Now, bunq has announced that it has planted over 40,000 trees within two months of launching the Green Card. This lets users offset a global reduction of CO2 emissions by almost 12.3 million kg. This translates into a whopping 13,000 flights commuting from Paris to New York.

This milestone has been possible via a partnership with Eden Reforestation Projects. bunq enhances the Green Card by launching an extended warranty and purchase protection on the purchases made with the Green Card. This lets users enjoy carefree shopping.

Bank of The Free

The Dutch challenger bank sees itself as the Bank of The Free. It is a totally independent bank, which makes life easy sans no branch visits, paperwork, and queues. In 2019, the company announced expansion into the EU countries and it is now available in 30 European markets.

Introduces Payment Sorter

Soon after the green tree-planting activities, bunq announced integration with Zaiper and letting entrepreneurs connect their bunq app to more than 1500 apps such as Gmail, Slack, Quickbooks, Xero, and MailChimp. The company introduced the bunq Payment Sorter, which makes budgeting easy. The Payment Sorter sorts the salary automatically by sending money instantly to the right sub-accounts.
