Framer raises €21 million: 4 things to know about world’s first in-app design store from Amsterdam

In the latest development, Amsterdam-based interactive design prototyping startup Framer has secured €21 million ($24 million) in a series B round of funding. This investment round was led by Atomico, a European Venture Capital firm along with participation from Accel and AngelList.

Back in December last year, Framer raised nearly €6.8 million ($7.7 million) in a funding round led by Accel, AngelList, Foundation Capital and Designer Fund. This investment was used to ramp up the product development, invest in design education and training and hire talent. Framer claims that it will use the latest investment to build its platform further for product teams and designers.

The Dutch startup was founded in 2013 by Koen Bok and Jorn Dijk. Prior to this, the duo were product designers at Facebook. The startup is behind the interactive design platform Framer X. Framer X is a fully integrated design, prototyping and developer tool. This tool lets developers create app designs and prototypes. Notably, Uber built its taxi app using Framer. And, its other customers are Airbnb, Snap, Facebook, Google and Microsoft.

Following the recent round of funding, here are some notable aspects about Framer, the visual design tool startup.

Beta launch of Team Store

In addition to the funding, the company also announced the beta launch of a new private design store for teams called Team Store. It lets employees at the same company work together and share components and assets within the Framer X platform.

Adaptive layouts make designing simple

With Framer X, which claims to be the world’s first in-app design store, the layout designing process is simple. You can get ready to design layouts for any device or platform, be it smartphones, PCs or TVs. The layout tool automatically figures out the hierarchy and constraints and let you customise further. You can pin or unpin the layer’s position and watch the tool show you how your selection will adapt. Framer X lets you design responsive lists and grids in a better way. The design tool comes with fraction and relative sizing that lets you fine-tune the design with exceptional control.

Flexible stacks provide a lot of features

Framer X introduces stacks, a new type of layout tool. You can easily distribute, position and rearrange the elements evenly on the canvas using this tool. To add a new layer, you just have to drop it within the stack and watch the other elements adapt themselves accordingly.

You can tailor everything in your stacks. The tool lets you change the direction, distribution type, alignment of elements and customise the spacing between the elements. You can rearrange the position of elements in just seconds and drag elements within a stack.

It isn’t too expensive

Framer X can be used for free for a trial period of 14 days. It gives access to all the features of the tool during this period. Besides this, there is a Personal subscription priced starting from €10.5 ($12) per month.
