How this London-based tech startup is using Artificial Intelligence to make journalists’ lives easier

Trint based in London is a leading automated transcription and editing platform. It uses machine learning and speech-to-text technology in order to automate transcription, which has been a pain-point suffered by journalists and content producers including video makers.

Trint raises $4.5 million funding

Founded in 2016 by Jeff Kofman, an Emmy Award winner, the London transcription startup raised $4.5 million (nearly €4 million) in Series A funding. This funding round was led by Horizons Lab, a Hong Kong-based seed fund operated by Horizon Ventures’ managers along with participation from The Associated Press and TechNexus.

With this latest round of funding, the company’s total funding amount increases to $7.8 million (nearly €7 million). The original backers of this startup are Google Digital News Innovation Fund and the Knight Enterprise Fund.

Kofman states that the funding will be used to enhance the AI-powered platform for customers to extract more value from recorded audio/video and unlock the emerging voice trend. He further noted that the startup is among those that have bypassed funding from VC firms to focus on steady growth and product development.

What Trint does?

Trint offers a web-based software that combines both a text editor and an audio/video player with the transaction output synced to the playhead of the audio player. This way, it becomes easy to correct the errors in transcriptions manually. Eventually, Trint gets smarter. Besides the web-based software, there is an iPhone app that can help transcribe phone calls and recordings directly on mobile.

Customer base

The London-based transcription startup has some of the world’s largest media organisations as its customer base. Its a list of enterprise clients includes The Washington Post, The Associated Press, Vice News and Der Spiegel.

While it was launched with just four employees, it has grown to 45 in a few years. And, it has opened an office in Toronto with seven employees.

Plans for future

Trint is all set to launch a new suite of collaboration features that will transform workflows for large teams letting them work with audio and video content and improve their ability to work on editing transcripts and publishing content. The new tool from Trint will combine a video player and an interactive transcript. This will make recorded content discoverable and shareable on the internet.

“In the last century, the world communicated through text; in the 21st-century communication is driven by voice and the spoken word,” said Kofman. “We’ve created Trint to go far beyond automated transcription, building the world’s first enterprise product for managing the workflow of the spoken word: letting users take raw recorded content, find the moments that matter and collaborate with others to produce content faster and more efficiently.”
