Recently, Tesla CEO Elon Musk took the stage in Los Angeles to unveil the company’s first electric pickup truck – Cybertruck. But, the event didn’t go according to the plan and had an embarrassing hiccup as well, which were also reportedly said to be marketing stunt.
‘There’s room for improvement.’
During the launch, the futuristic pickup truck suffered a massive setback after the supposedly-shatter-proof armoured glass shattered during the demo by design lead Franz Von Holzhausen. “Well, maybe that was a little too hard. It didn’t go through,” said Musk.
Von Holzhausen also tried the passenger side window, and it yielded the same result. “Not bad, there’s room for improvement,” said Musk. The good part is that the truck body withstood multiple strikes from a sledgehammer without any mark or dent.
“We threw wrenches, we threw everything even literally the kitchen sink at the glass, and it didn’t break. For some weird reason, it broke now,” he added. “I don’t know why. We will fix it in post.”
Post the bumpy launch event, Tesla’s shared plummeted 6.1%. It’s no doubt that the Cybertruck is the vehicle of the future and it is insane. Having said that, we have mentioned 7 reasons why we absolutely love this futuristic yet monstrous truck.
Secured 187,000 orders so far, but not before 2021!
According to Elon Musk, “146k Cybertruck orders so far, with 42% choosing dual, 41% tri & 17% single motor. With no advertising & no paid endorsement.” But as per the latest tweet from Musk, the pre-orders touched somewhere around 187k orders. Amazing isn’t it?
Shattered glass! So what?
The all-electric truck features an unconventionally futuristic design, which appears to have been taken a queue from science fiction movies. The Cybertruck is designed to have the utility of a truck and the performance of a sports car. According to Elon Musk, the Cybertruck was partly inspired from James Bond’s ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’ movie.
Three variants!
Competing directly with F-150, this vehicle is built to be durable, versatile, and capable, with an exceptional performance both on-road and off-road. It will come in three variants: single motor rear-wheel drive with a range of 250 miles, dual-motor all-wheel drive, has a range of 300 miles, and the most expensive tri-motor all-wheel drive can go up to 500 miles.
The secret behind a shatterproof body!
As per the company claims, the truck body is constructed from 30X cold-rolled stainless steel, which is capable of withstanding 9mm bullets and armoured glass. It has 100 cubic feet of the exterior, lockable storage including the vault, frunk, and sail pillars.
60mph in just 2.9 seconds!
Inside, the Cybertruck can accommodate up to six occupants as well. Talking about the interior, Musk chose a minimalistic design with a U-shaped steering and a huge 17-inch touch screen for interaction. It’s worth mentioning that the top-end variant will be able to hit 60mph in just 2.9 seconds, which is indeed amazing considering its build and weight.
Monstrous in specs and pricing!
According to the company, this monstrous truck can tow more than 14,000 lbs and can carry a payload of up to 3,500 lbs. It also has adaptive air suspension, which adjusts its ride height depending on the terrain.
The company has said the Cybertruck would be in production in 2021, starting at $39,900 (approx €36,198) and goes up to $69,900 (approx €63,415). You can place an order now by paying $100 (approx €90), which Tesla says is fully refundable.
Better than Ford F-150, claims Musk
The Cybertruck marks the first foray by Tesla into the pickup truck market, which is hugely dominated by Ford Motor Co’s F-150, in addition to models by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and General Motors Co.
Electric is the future!
After delaying the production of Tesla Semi by a year, the company has confirmed to start production of its electric semi-truck with “limited volumes” in 2020. At present, Tesla currently doesn’t have many rivals when it comes to the electric-semi truck category. Since electric is the future, it would be interesting to see how other companies play their cards.
