Startups can sometimes struggle to garner funding from the get-go. Even if the startup’s idea, which it works upon, might be ingenuine, it can be a real challenge pitching it to Venture Capitalists. Finding such VCs is also a tough task since one has to figure out who would be most interested in backing your company. To make this task a whole lot easier, here’s a list of the top 10 firms in Spain, as per DealRoom, who are actively investing in tech startup this year.

One of the most prolific VC firms, Nauta Capital has participated in deals totalling €91.3 million in the last 12 months. Operating out of Barcelona in Spain, the firm has a deep focus on B2B software companies and prefers investing in them at their late Seed and Series A rounds. The pan-European operates from three hubs: London (UK), Barcelona (Spain) and Munich (Germany).

Ysios Capital

Based in Barcelona, Spain, Ysios Capital is an investment fund that provides private equity financing to early and mid-stage human healthcare and life science companies. It has participated in deals totalling €185 million in last year. The firm targets the biotechnology industry, with an exclusive focus on therapeutics.

Kibo Ventures

Kibo Ventures operates out of Madrid, Spain, and it focuses on investing in early-stage internet and mobile startups, with a “Super Angel” approach. The company initially invests €1 to €2 million in startups during Series A funding with simple terms and process. It took part in deals totalling €59.2 million in the last 12 months.

Seaya Ventures

With multiple notable investments under its belt like Spotahome, Movo and others, Seaya Ventures invests in early and growth stage companies. It mainly focuses on internet and technology-enabled business in Spain and operates out of Madrid. It has participated in deals totalling €173m in the last year.

Sabadell Venture Capital

Sabadell Venture Capital invests as an early VC in startups. The firm’s investment in the last 12 months total to €41.4 million. Some notable companies that Sabadella VC has invested in include Red Point, Corner Job, Anaconda BioMed, among others.

Telefonica

Being backed by one of the largest telecommunications companies in the world is a big deal. Telefonica has its headquarters in Spain and it has invested in numerous companies till now. It has some Unicorns in its portfolio as well like E-Plus Gruppe and Canal+.

The Santander group is a bank with services that specifically focus on retail and commercial sectors. It makes debt investments, prominently in fintech startups, and some of the latest ones to join Santander’s portfolio are PayJoy, Kabbage and Socure.

Caixa Capital Risc

An institutional investor, Caixa Capital Risc, specialises in backing innovative companies in Spain when they are in their early stages. It does so through convertible loans or equity anc it company boasts of investments in over 100 companies and has participated in deals totalling €45.7 million in last 12 months.

Samaipata Ventures

Samaipata Ventures is an early-stage founders’ fund that is led by one of the co-founders of La Nevera Roja. Even though the company is new, it has participated in deals totalling €51.9 million in the last year and some notable companies it invested in include Spotahome, Ontrucks and Jinn.

Inveready is one of the leading venture capital early-stage investment funds in Spain. The firm invests in both Equity and Venture Debt, in technology companies, via its seven funds. It boasts of over 80 companies in its portfolio that are touted to be leaders in their respective markets.
