Last update:

Many companies have brought the advantages of technology to the healthcare industry. MRIguidance, which is a spin-off company of UMC Utrecht is one such startup. It develops the medical imaging technique called BoneMRI.

It was founded in 2016 by MR physicist Peter Seevinck, entrepreneur Roel Raatgever, and image scientist Marijn van Stralen. The first ever research in 2013 resulted in the proprietary imaging technique.

Notably, MRIguidance is a former UtrechtInc participant, which took part in the incubator program supporting ambitious entrepreneurs. It participated in the program in 2015 along with BoldMindz, Stoov, Pick This Up, TestToolFactory, Senfel and SpeakUp VR.

Secures €1.5 million funding

In recent funding round, MRIguidance has secured €1.5 million seed investment from healthcare investor Health Innovations. This investment will be used for the development and rollout of BoneMRI. Peter Seevinck, co-founder of MRIguidance and inventor of BoneMRI said, “I am very happy that we proved the concept in a clinical setting and with this investment we are now going to bring BoneMRI to the patient.”

Regarding the investment, Roel Raatgever, CEO of MRIguidance said, “The investment gives MRIguidance a great boost and will accelerate our efforts to bring BoneMRI to the patient. We are very happy to get a strong investors team on board.”

What is BoneMRI imaging technique?

BoneMRI is a software solution providing unprecedented 3D visualisation of the bone anatomy using the conventional MRI scanners. Prior to this technology, the MRI scanners were predominantly used to assess soft tissues. It is a one-stop-shop in medical imaging. It lets one characterise all the human tissues without any harmful radiation.

It is believed that BoneMRI will contribute a lot to the improvement of patient care quality. On the other hand, it will also reduce the healthcare cost to a great extent. This technique is being developed and clinically validated at UMC Utrecht and many large hospitals in Belgium and the Netherlands. With the secured fund, MRIguidance will get a boost to accelerate the rollout of the technique to the patients.

Second investment from Health Innovations Fund III

Health Innovations is a seed investment fund investing in startups that aim to improve the quality of healthcare and make it more affordable. It focuses on innovative care concepts, medical technology, eHealth, Health Services and Digital Health.

Earlier this year, Health Innovations started its third fund called Health Innovations Fund III. And, the seed investment in MRIguidance is the second investment in its third fund. Regarding the funding round, Dick Sietses, a partner at Health innovations said, “The BoneMRI technology will improve the quality of patient care, while at the same time reducing healthcare costs. This, combined with MRIguidance’ strong technology base, integrating AI-technology into their solutions, makes MRIguidance a perfect match for our fund”.
